न ते गिरित्राखिललोकपालविरिञ्चवैकुण्ठसुरेन्द्रगम्यम् । ज्योतिः परं यत्र रजस्तमश्च सत्त्वं न यद्ब्रह्म निरस्तभेदम् ।‌। ८-७-३१ ।।

sanskrit

O Lord Girīśa, since the impersonal Brahman effulgence is transcendental to the material modes of goodness, passion and ignorance, the various directors of this material world certainly cannot appreciate it or even know where it is. It is not understandable even to Lord Brahmā, Lord Viṣṇu or the King of heaven, Mahendra. ।‌। 8-7-31 ।।

english translation

हे गिरीश! चूँकि निराकार ब्रह्म तेज सतो, रजो तथा तमो गुणों से परे है अतएव इस भौतिक जगत के विभिन्न निदेशक (लोकपाल) न तो इसकी प्रशंसा कर सकते हैं न ही यह जान सकते हैं कि वह कहाँ है। वह ब्रह्मा, विष्णु या स्वर्ग के राजा महेन्द्र द्वारा भी ज्ञेय नहीं है। ।‌। ८-७-३१ ।।

When annihilation is performed by the flames and sparks emanating from your eyes, the entire creation is burned to ashes. Nonetheless, you do not know how this happens. What then is to be said of your destroying the Dakṣa-yajña, Tripurāsura and the kālakūṭa poison? Such activities cannot be subject matters for prayers offered to you. ।‌। 8-7-32 ।।

english translation

जब आपकी आँखों से उद्भूत लपटों तथा चिनगारियों से प्रलय होता है, तो सारी सृष्टि जलकर राख हो जाती है। तो भी आपको पता नहीं चलता कि यह कैसे होता है। अतएव आपके द्वारा दक्ष-यज्ञ, त्रिपुरासुर तथा कालकूट विष विनष्ट किये जाने के विषय में क्या कहा जा सकता है? ऐसे कार्यकलाप आपको अर्पित की जाने वाली स्तुतियों के विषय नहीं बन सकते। ।‌। ८-७-३२ ।।

ये त्वात्मरामगुरुभिर्हृदि चिन्तिताङ्घ्रिद्वन्द्वं चरन्तमुमया तपसाभितप्तम् । कत्थन्त उग्रपुरुषं निरतं श्मशाने ते नूनमूतिमविदंस्तव हातलज्जाः ।‌। ८-७-३३ ।।

Exalted, self-satisfied persons who preach to the entire world think of your lotus feet constantly within their hearts. However, when persons who do not know your austerity see you moving with Umā, they misunderstand you to be lusty, or when they see you wandering in the crematorium they mistakenly think that you are ferocious and envious. Certainly they are shameless. They cannot understand your activities. ।‌। 8-7-33 ।।

सारे विश्व को उपदेश देने वाले महान् आत्मतुष्ट व्यक्ति अपने हृदयों में आपके चरणकमलों का निरन्तर चिन्तन करते हैं, किन्तु जब आपकी तपस्या को न जानने वाले व्यक्ति आपको उमा के साथ विचरते देखते हैं, तो वे आपको भ्रमवश कामी समझते हैं अथवा जब वे आपको श्मशान में घूमते हुए देखते हैं, तो भ्रमवश वे आपको अत्यन्त नृशंस तथा ईर्ष्यालु समझते हैं। निस्सन्देह, वे निर्लज्ज हैं। वे आपके कार्यकलापों को कभी नहीं समझ सकते। ।‌। ८-७-३३ ।।

Even personalities like Lord Brahmā and other demigods cannot understand your position, for you are beyond the moving and nonmoving creation. Since no one can understand you in truth, how can one offer you prayers? It is impossible. As far as we are concerned, we are creatures of Lord Brahmā’s creation. Under the circumstances, therefore, we cannot offer you adequate prayers, but as far as our ability allows, we have expressed our feelings. ।‌। 8-7-34 ।।

ब्रह्मा जी तथा अन्य देवतागण जैसे व्यक्ति तक आपकी स्थिति नहीं समझ सकते क्योंकि आप चर तथा अचर सृष्टि से भी परे हैं। चूँकि आपको सही रूप में कोई नहीं समझ सकता तो फिर भला कोई किस तरह आपकी स्तुति कर सकता है? यह असम्भव है। जहाँ तक हमारा सम्बन्ध है, हम ब्रह्मा जी की सृष्टि के प्राणी हैं। अतएव ऐसी परिस्थितियों में हम आपकी ठीक से स्तुति नहीं कर सकते, किन्तु हमने अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार अपनी भावनाएँ व्यक्त की हैं। ।‌। ८-७-३४ ।।

एतत्परं प्रपश्यामो न परं ते महेश्वर । मृडनाय हि लोकस्य व्यक्तिस्तेऽव्यक्तकर्मणः ।‌। ८-७-३५ ।।

O greatest of all rulers, your actual identity is impossible for us to understand. As far as we can see, your presence brings flourishing happiness to everyone. Beyond this, no one can appreciate your activities. We can see this much, and nothing more. ।‌। 8-7-35 ।।

हे महान् शासक! हमारे लिए आपके असली स्वरूप को समझ पाना असम्भव है। जहाँ तक हम देख पाते हैं, आपकी उपस्थिति हरएक के लिए सुख-समृद्धि लाती है। इसके परे, कोई भी आपके कार्यकलापों को नहीं समझ सकता। हम इतना ही देख सकते हैं, इससे अधिक कुछ भी नहीं। ।‌। ८-७-३५ ।।
