श्रीशुक उवाच एवं विरिञ्चादिभिरीडितस्तद्विज्ञाय तेषां हृदयं यथैव । जगाद जीमूतगभीरया गिरा बद्धाञ्जलीन् संवृतसर्वकारकान् ।‌। ८-६-१६ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: When the Lord was thus offered prayers by the demigods, headed by Lord Brahmā, He understood the purpose for which they had approached Him. Therefore, in a deep voice that resembled the rumbling of clouds, the Lord replied to the demigods, who all stood there attentively with folded hands. ।‌। 8-6-16 ।।

english translation

श्री शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने आगे कहा : जब ब्रह्मा समेत सारे देवताओं ने भगवान् की स्तुति की तो वे उनके वहाँ आने का प्रयोजन समझ गये। अतएव भगवान् ने बादल की गर्जना के समान गम्भीर वाणी में उन देवताओं को उत्तर दिया जो हाथ जोडक़र सावधानी से वहाँ खड़े थे। ।‌। ८-६-१६ ।।

एक एवेश्वरस्तस्मिन् सुरकार्ये सुरेश्वरः । विहर्तुकामस्तानाह समुद्रोन्मथनादिभिः ।। ८-६-१७ ।।

sanskrit

Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of the demigods, was capable of performing the activities of the demigods by Himself, He wanted to enjoy pastimes in churning the ocean. Therefore He spoke as follows. ।‌। 8-6-17 ।।

english translation

यद्यपि देवताओं के स्वामी भगवान् देवताओं के कार्यकलापों को स्वयं सम्पन्न करने में समर्थ थे फिर भी उन्होंने समुद्र-मन्थन की लीला का आनन्द उठाना चाहा। अतएव वे इस प्रकार बोले। ।‌। ८-६-१७ ।।

श्रीभगवानुवाच हन्त ब्रह्मन्नहो शम्भो हे देवा मम भाषितम् । श‍ृणुतावहिताः सर्वे श्रेयो वः स्याद्यथा सुराः ।‌। ८-६-१८ ।।

sanskrit

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and other demigods, please hear Me with great attention, for what I say will bring good fortune for all of you. ।‌। 8-6-18 ।।

english translation

भगवान् ने कहा! हे ब्रह्मा, शिव तथा अन्य देवताओ! तुम सभी ध्यानपूर्वक मेरी बात सुनो क्योंकि मैं जो कुछ कहूँगा उससे तुम सब का कल्याण होगा। ।‌। ८-६-१८ ।।

zrIbhagavAnuvAca hanta brahmannaho zambho he devA mama bhASitam | za‍RNutAvahitAH sarve zreyo vaH syAdyathA surAH |‌| 8-6-18 ||

यात दानवदैतेयैस्तावत्सन्धिर्विधीयताम् । कालेनानुगृहीतैस्तैर्यावद्वो भव आत्मनः ।‌। ८-६-१९ ।।

sanskrit

As long as you are not flourishing, you should make a truce with the demons and asuras, who are now being favored by time. ।‌। 8-6-19 ।।

english translation

जब तक तुम उन्नति नहीं कर रहे ही, तुम सब को दानवों तथा असुरों के साथ सन्धि कर लेनी चाहिए क्योंकि सम्प्रति समय उनके अनुकूल है। ।‌। ८-६-१९ ।।

अरयोऽपि हि सन्धेयाः सति कार्यार्थगौरवे । अहिमूषिकवद्देवा ह्यर्थस्य पदवीं गतैः ।। ८-६-२० ।।

sanskrit

O demigods, fulfilling one’s own interests is so important that one may even have to make a truce with one’s enemies. For the sake of one’s self-interest, one has to act according to the logic of the snake and the mouse. ।‌। 8-6-20 ।।

english translation

हे देवताओ! अपना हित इतना महत्वपूर्ण होता है कि मनुष्य को अपने शत्रुओं से सन्धि भी करनी पड़ सकती है। अपने हित (लाभ) के लिए मनुष्य को सर्प तथा चूहे के तर्क के अनुसार कार्य करना चाहिए। ।‌। ८-६-२० ।।
