बलिर्महेन्द्रं दशभिस्त्रिभिरैरावतं शरैः । चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहानेकेनारोहमार्च्छयत् ।। ८-१०-४१ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Bali then attacked Indra with ten arrows and attacked Airāvata, Indra’s carrier elephant, with three arrows. With four arrows he attacked the four horsemen guarding Airāvata’s legs, and with one arrow he attacked the driver of the elephant. ।। 8-10-41 ।।

english translation

महाराज बलि ने तब दस बाणों से इन्द्र पर तथा तीन बाणों से इन्द्र के वाहन ऐरावत पर वार किया। उन्होंने चार बाणों से ऐरावत के पाँवों की रक्षा करने वाले चार घुड़सवारों पर आक्रमण किया और एक बाण से उसके चालक पर। ।। ८-१०-४१ ।।

स तानापततः शक्रस्तावद्भिः शीघ्रविक्रमः । चिच्छेद निशितैर्भल्लैरसम्प्राप्तान् हसन्निव ।। ८-१०-४२ ।।

sanskrit

Before Bali Mahārāja’s arrows could reach him, Indra, King of heaven, who is expert in dealing with arrows, smiled and counteracted the arrows with arrows of another type, known as bhalla, which were extremely sharp. ।। 8-10-42 ।।

english translation

इसके पूर्व कि बलि महाराज के बाण स्वर्ग के राजा इन्द्र तक पहुँचे, बाणों के चलाने में पटु इन्द्र ने हँसते हुए एक अन्य प्रकार के अत्यन्त तीक्ष्ण भल्ल नामक बाण से उन्हें काट डाला। ।। ८-१०-४२ ।।

तस्य कर्मोत्तमं वीक्ष्य दुर्मर्षः शक्तिमाददे । तां ज्वलन्तीं महोल्काभां हस्तस्थामच्छिनद्धरिः ।। ८-१०-४३ ।।

sanskrit

When Bali Mahārāja saw the expert military activities of Indra, he could not restrain his anger. Thus he took up another weapon, known as śakti, which blazed like a great firebrand. But Indra cut that weapon to pieces while it was still in Bali’s hand. ।। 8-10-43 ।।

english translation

जब बलि महाराज ने इन्द्र के दक्ष सैन्य कार्यकलापों को देखा तो वे अपना क्रोध रोक न सके। उन्होंने शक्ति नामक एक दूसरा हथियार ग्रहण किया जो महान् अग्नि पुंज की भाँति ज्वलित हो रहा था। किन्तु इन्द्र ने इसे बलि के हाथ से छूटने के पूर्व ही खण्ड-खण्ड कर दिया। ।। ८-१०-४३ ।।

tasya karmottamaM vIkSya durmarSaH zaktimAdade | tAM jvalantIM maholkAbhAM hastasthAmacchinaddhariH || 8-10-43 ||

ततः शूलं ततः प्रासं ततस्तोमरमृष्टयः । यद्यच्छस्त्रं समादद्यात्सर्वं तदच्छिनद्विभुः ।। ८-१०-४४ ।।

Thereafter, one by one, Bali Mahārāja used a lance, prāsa, tomara, ṛṣṭis and other weapons, but whatever weapons he took up, Indra immediately cut them to pieces. ।। 8-10-44 ।।

english translation

तत्पश्चात् बलि महाराज ने एक-एक करके भाला, प्रास, तोमर, ऋष्टि तथा अन्य हथियार चलाये, किन्तु वे जो भी हथियार लेते थे, उन्हें महान् इन्द्र तुरन्त ही खण्ड-खण्ड कर देते थे। ।। ८-१०-४४ ।।

ससर्जाथासुरीं मायामन्तर्धानगतोऽसुरः । ततः प्रादुरभूच्छैलः सुरानीकोपरि प्रभो ।। ८-१०-४५ ।।

My dear King, Bali Mahārāja then disappeared and resorted to demoniac illusions. A giant mountain, generated from illusion, then appeared above the heads of the demigod soldiers. ।। 8-10-45 ।।

english translation

हे राजा! तब बलि महाराज अदृश्य हो गये और उन्होंने आसुरी माया का सहारा लिया। तब देवताओं की सेना के सिरों के ऊपर माया से उत्पन्न एक विशाल पर्वत प्रकट हुआ। ।। ८-१०-४५ ।।
