किं क्षेमशूरैर्विबुधैरसंयुगविकत्थनैः । रहोजुषा किं हरिणा शम्भुना वा वनौकसा । किमिन्द्रेणाल्पवीर्येण ब्रह्मणा वा तपस्यता ॥ १०-४-३६ ॥
The demigods boast uselessly while away from the battlefield. Only where there is no fighting can they show their prowess. Therefore, from such demigods we have nothing to fear. As for Lord Viṣṇu, He is in seclusion in the core of the hearts of the yogīs. As for Lord Śiva, he has gone to the forest. And as for Lord Brahmā, he is always engaged in austerities and meditation. The other demigods, headed by Indra, are devoid of prowess. Therefore you have nothing to fear. ॥ 10-4-36 ॥

देवतागण युद्धभूमि से दूर रहकर व्यर्थ ही डींग मारते हैं। वे वहीं अपने पराक्रम का प्रदर्शन कर सकते हैं जहाँ युद्ध नहीं होता। अतएव ऐसे देवताओं से हमें किसी प्रकार का भय नहीं है। जहाँ तक भगवान् विष्णु की बात है, वे तो केवल योगियों के हृदय में एकान्तवास करते हैं और भगवान् शिव, वे तो जंगल चले गये हैं। ब्रह्मा सदैव तपस्या तथा ध्यान में ही लीन रहते हैं। इन्द्र इत्यादि अन्य सारे देवता पराक्रमविहीन हैं। अत: आपको कोई भय नहीं है। ॥ १०-४-३६ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतथापि देवाः सापत्न्यान्नोपेक्ष्या इति मन्महे । ततस्तन्मूलखनने नियुङ्क्ष्वास्माननुव्रतान् ॥ १०-४-३७ ॥
Nonetheless, because of their enmity, our opinion is that the demigods should not be neglected. Therefore, to uproot them completely, engage us in fighting with them, for we are ready to follow you. ॥ 10-4-37 ॥
english translation
फिर भी हमारा मत है कि उनकी शत्रुता के कारण देवताओं के साथ लापरवाही नहीं की जानी चाहिए। अतएव उनको समूल नष्ट करने के लिए आप हमें उनके साथ युद्ध में लगाइए क्योंकि हम आपका अनुगमन करने के लिए तैयार हैं। ॥ १०-४-३७ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptयथाऽऽमयोऽङ्गे समुपेक्षितो नृभिर्नशक्यते रूढपदश्चिकित्सितुम् । यथेन्द्रियग्राम उपेक्षितस्तथा रिपुर्महान् बद्धबलो न चाल्यते ॥ १०-४-३८ ॥
As a disease, if initially neglected, becomes acute and impossible to cure, or as the senses, if not controlled at first, are impossible to control later, an enemy, if neglected in the beginning, later becomes insurmountable. ॥ 10-4-38 ॥

जिस तरह शुरू में रोग की उपेक्षा करने से वह गम्भीर तथा दु:साध्य हो जाता है या जिस तरह प्रारम्भ में नियंत्रित न करने से, बाद में इन्द्रियाँ वश में नहीं रहतीं उसी तरह यदि आरम्भ में शत्रु की उपेक्षा की जाती है, तो बाद में वह दर्जेय हो जाता है। ॥ १०-४-३८ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptमूलं हि विष्णुर्देवानां यत्र धर्मः सनातनः । तस्य च ब्रह्मगोविप्रास्तपो यज्ञाः सदक्षिणाः ॥ १०-४-३९ ॥
The foundation of all the demigods is Lord Viṣṇu, who lives and is worshiped wherever there are religious principles, traditional culture, the Vedas, cows, brāhmaṇas, austerities, and sacrifices with proper remuneration. ॥ 10-4-39 ॥

समस्त देवताओं के आधार भगवान् विष्णु हैं जिनका वास वहीं होता है जहाँ धर्म, परम्परागत संस्कृति, वेद, गौवें, ब्राह्मण, तपस्या तथा दक्षिणायुत यज्ञ होते हैं। ॥ १०-४-३९ ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्मात्सर्वात्मना राजन् ब्राह्मणान् ब्रह्मवादिनः । तपस्विनो यज्ञशीलान् गाश्च हन्मो हविर्दुघाः ॥ १०-४-४० ॥
O King, we, who are your adherents in all respects, shall therefore kill the Vedic brāhmaṇas, the persons engaged in offering sacrifices and austerities, and the cows that supply milk, from which clarified butter is obtained for the ingredients of sacrifice. ॥ 10-4-40 ॥

हे राजन्, हम आपके सच्चे अनुयायी हैं, अत: वैदिक ब्राह्मणों, यज्ञ तथा तपस्या में लगे व्यक्तियों तथा उन गायों का, जो अपने दूध से यज्ञ के लिए घी प्रदान करती हैं, वध कर डालेंगे। ॥ १०-४-४० ॥
