अहो पश्यत नारीणामपि कृष्णे जगद्गुरौ । दुरन्तभावं योऽविध्यन् मृत्युपाशान् गृहाभिधान् ।। १०-२३-४१ ।।

sanskrit

Just see the unlimited love these women have developed for Lord Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master of the entire universe! This love has broken for them the very bonds of death — their attachment to family life. ।। 10-23-41 ।।

english translation

जरा इन स्त्रियों के असीम प्रेम को तो देखो जो इन्होंने अखिल विश्व के आध्यात्मिक गुरु भगवान् के प्रति उत्पन्न कर रखा है। इस प्रेम ने गृहस्थ जीवन के प्रति उनकी आसक्ति—मृत्यु के बन्धन—को छिन्न कर दिया है। ।। १०-२३-४१ ।।

aho pazyata nArINAmapi kRSNe jagadgurau | durantabhAvaM yo'vidhyan mRtyupAzAn gRhAbhidhAn || 10-23-41 ||

नासां द्विजातिसंस्कारो न निवासो गुरावपि । न तपो नात्ममीमांसा न शौचं न क्रियाः शुभाः ।। १०-२३-४२ ।।

sanskrit

These women have never undergone the purificatory rites of the twice-born classes, nor have they lived as brahmacārīs in the āśrama of a spiritual master, nor have they executed austerities, speculated on the nature of the self, followed the formalities of cleanliness or engaged in pious rituals. ।। 10-23-42 ।।

english translation

इन स्त्रियों ने न तो द्विजों के शुद्धीकरण संस्कार कराये हैं, न ही किसी आध्यात्मिक गुरु के आश्रम में ब्रह्मचारियों का जीवन बिताया है, न इन्होंने कोई तपस्या की है या आत्मा के विषय में मनन किया है या स्वच्छता की औपचारिकताओं का निर्वाह अथवा पावन अनुष्ठानों में अपने को लगाया है। ।। १०-२३-४२ ।।

nAsAM dvijAtisaMskAro na nivAso gurAvapi | na tapo nAtmamImAMsA na zaucaM na kriyAH zubhAH || 10-23-42 ||

अथापि ह्युत्तमश्लोके कृष्णे योगेश्वरेश्वरे । भक्तिर्दृढा न चास्माकं संस्कारादिमतामपि ।। १०-२३-४३ ।।

sanskrit

Nevertheless, they have firm devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa, whose glories are chanted by the exalted hymns of the Vedas and who is the supreme master of all masters of mystic power. We, on the other hand, have no such devotion for the Lord, although we have executed all these processes. ।। 10-23-43 ।।

english translation

तो भी इनकी दृढ़ भक्ति उन भगवान् कृष्ण के प्रति है जिनका यशोगान वैदिक मंत्रों द्वारा किया जाता है और जो योगेश्वरों के भी ईश्वर हैं। और दूसरी ओर हम हैं जिन्होंने भगवान् की कोई भक्ति नहीं की यद्यपि हमने इन सारी विधियों को सम्पन्न किया है। ।। १०-२३-४३ ।।

ननु स्वार्थविमूढानां प्रमत्तानां गृहेहया । अहो नः स्मारयामास गोपवाक्यैः सतां गतिः ।। १०-२३-४४ ।।

Indeed, infatuated as we are with our household affairs, we have deviated completely from the real aim of our life. But now just see how the Lord, through the words of these simple cowherd boys, has reminded us of the ultimate destination of all true transcendentalists. ।। 10-23-44 ।।

english translation

निस्सन्देह हम लोग गृहकार्यों में व्यस्त रहने के कारण अपने जीवन के असली लक्ष्य से पूरी तरह विपथ हो गये हैं। किन्तु अब जरा देखो तो कि भगवान् ने किस तरह इन सीधे-सादे ग्वालबालों के शब्दों से हमें समस्त सच्चे ब्रह्मवादियों के चरम गन्तव्य का स्मरण दिलाया है। ।। १०-२३-४४ ।।

अन्यथा पूर्णकामस्य कैवल्याद्याशिषां पतेः । ईशितव्यैः किमस्माभिरीशस्यैतद्विडम्बनम् ।। १०-२३-४५ ।।

sanskrit

Otherwise, why would the supreme controller — whose every desire is already fulfilled and who is the master of liberation and all other transcendental benedictions — enact this pretense with us, who are always to be controlled by Him? ।। 10-23-45 ।।

english translation

अन्यथा पूर्ण काम, मोक्ष तथा दिव्य आशीर्वादों के स्वामी परम नियन्ता हमारे साथ यह विडम्बना क्यों करते? हम तो सदैव उन्हीं के नियंत्रण में रहने के लिए ही हैं। ।। १०-२३-४५ ।।
