श्रीशुक उवाच एवं स सामभिर्भेदैर्बोध्यमानोऽपि दारुणः । न न्यवर्तत कौरव्य पुरुषादाननुव्रतः ॥ १०-१-४६ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: O best of the Kuru dynasty, Kaṁsa was fiercely cruel and was actually a follower of the Rākṣasas. Therefore he could be neither pacified nor terrified by the good instructions given by Vasudeva. He did not care about the results of sinful activities, either in this life or in the next. ॥ 10-1-46 ॥

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे कुरुवंश में श्रेष्ठ, कंस अत्यंत क्रूर था और वास्तव में राक्षसों का अनुयायी था। अतएव वसुदेव के सदुपदेशों से उसे न तो समझाया-बुझाया जा सकता था, न ही भयभीत किया जा सकता था। उसे इस जीवन में या अगले जीवन में पापकर्मों के फलों की कोई चिन्ता नहीं थी। ॥ १०-१-४६ ॥

निर्बन्धं तस्य तं ज्ञात्वा विचिन्त्यानकदुन्दुभिः । प्राप्तं कालं प्रतिव्योढुमिदं तत्रान्वपद्यत ॥ १०-१-४७ ॥
When Vasudeva saw that Kaṁsa was determined to kill his sister Devakī, he thought to himself very deeply. Considering the imminent danger of death, he thought of another plan to stop Kaṁsa. ॥ 10-1-47 ॥
english translation
जब वसुदेव ने देखा कि कंस अपनी बहन देवकी को मार डालने पर तुला हुआ है, तो उसने अपने मन में गम्भीरतापूर्वक सोचा। मृत्यु को आया हुआ देखकर उसने कंस को रोकने का दूसरा उपाय सोचा। ॥ १०-१-४७ ॥

मृत्युर्बुद्धिमतापोह्यो यावद्बुद्धिबलोदयम् । यद्यसौ न निवर्तेत नापराधोऽस्ति देहिनः ॥ १०-१-४८ ॥
As long as he has intelligence and bodily strength, an intelligent person must try to avoid death. This is the duty of every embodied person. But if death cannot be avoided in spite of one’s endeavors, a person facing death commits no offense. ॥ 10-1-48 ॥

बुद्धिमान मनुष्य को चाहिए कि जब तक बुद्धि तथा शारीरिक पराक्रम रहे, तब तक मृत्यु से बचने का प्रयास करता रहे। हर देहधारी का यही कर्तव्य है। यदि उद्यम करने पर भी मृत्यु को टाला नहीं जा सके, तो मृत्यु को वरण करने वाला मनुष्य अपराधी नहीं है। ॥ १०-१-४८ ॥

प्रदाय मृत्यवे पुत्रान् मोचये कृपणामिमाम् । सुता मे यदि जायेरन् मृत्युर्वा न म्रियेत चेत् ॥ १०-१-४९ ॥
Vasudeva considered: By delivering all my sons to Kaṁsa, who is death personified, I shall save the life of Devakī. Perhaps Kaṁsa will die before my sons take birth, or, since he is already destined to die at the hands of my son, one of my sons may kill him. ॥ 10-1-49 ॥

वसुदेव ने विचार किया: मैं मृत्यु रूपी कंस को अपने सारे पुत्र देकर देवकी के प्राण बचा सकता हूँ। हो सकता है कि कंस मेरे पुत्रों के जन्म के पूर्व ही मर जाए, या फिर जब उसे मेरे पुत्र के हाथों से मरना लिखा है, तो मेरा कोई पुत्र उसे मारे ही। ॥ १०-१-४९ ॥

विपर्ययो वा किं न स्याद्गतिर्धातुर्दुरत्यया । उपस्थितो निवर्तेत निवृत्तः पुनरापतेत् ॥ १०-१-५० ॥
For the time being, let me promise to hand over my sons so that Kaṁsa will give up this immediate threat, and if in due course of time Kaṁsa dies, I shall have nothing to fear. ॥ 10-1-50 ॥
english translation
इस समय मुझे चाहिए कि मैं कंस को अपने सारे पुत्रों को सौंपने की प्रतिज्ञा कर लूँ जिससे कंस अपनी यह धमकी त्याग दे और यदि आगे चलकर कंस मर जाता है, तो फिर मुझे डरने की कोई बात नहीं रह जाती। ॥ १०-१-५० ॥
