अथ हैमवतीं राम दिशं त्यक्त्वा महामुनिः । पूर्वां दिशमनुप्राप्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥ १-६५-१

Oh ! Rama thereafter the great ascetic (Vishvaamitra), abandoning the snowbound Himalayas on north reached the eastern quarter and performed rigorous austerities. ॥ 1-65-1॥

english translation

atha haimavatIM rAma dizaM tyaktvA mahAmuniH । pUrvAM dizamanuprApya tapastepe sudAruNam ॥ 1-65-1

मौनं वर्षसहस्रस्य कृत्वा व्रतमनुत्तमम् । चकाराप्रतिमं राम तपः परमदुष्करम् ॥ १-६५-२

Having observed a unique vow of silence for a thousand years, Oh ! Rama he practised unprecedented and extremely difficult austerities. ॥ 1-65-2॥

english translation

maunaM varSasahasrasya kRtvA vratamanuttamam । cakArApratimaM rAma tapaH paramaduSkaram ॥ 1-65-2

पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रे तु काष्ठभूतं महामुनिम् । विघ्नैर्बहुभिराधूतं क्रोधो नान्तरमाविशत् ॥ १-६५-३

After completion of a thousand years the great ascetic ( Vishvamitra ) became like a piece of wood. In spite of many impediments, he was unshaken, anger did not enter into his mind. ॥ 1-65-3॥

english translation

pUrNe varSasahasre tu kASThabhUtaM mahAmunim । vighnairbahubhirAdhUtaM krodho nAntaramAvizat ॥ 1-65-3

स कृत्वा निश्चयं राम तप आतिष्ठदव्ययम् । तस्य वर्षसहस्रस्य व्रते पूर्णे महाव्रतः ॥ १-६५-४

Oh ! Rama, with firm determination he practised unmitigated austerities. When the thousand-years old vow was over the great practitioner ( Vishvamitra ) of vows . - ॥ 1-65-4॥

sa kRtvA nizcayaM rAma tapa AtiSThadavyayam । tasya varSasahasrasya vrate pUrNe mahAvrataH ॥ 1-65-4

भोक्तुमारब्धवानन्नं तस्मिन् काले रघूत्तम । इन्द्रो द्विजातिर्भूत्वा तं सिद्धमन्नमयाचत ॥ १-६५-५

- began to partake cooked meal, Oh ! Best of Raghus dynasty (Rama), at this moment Indra assumed the guise of a brahmin and asked him for the meal (that he was going to eat). ॥ 1-65-5॥

bhoktumArabdhavAnannaM tasmin kAle raghUttama । indro dvijAtirbhUtvA taM siddhamannamayAcata ॥ 1-65-5
