विशाम्यहं हि पातालं स्त्रोतसा गृह्य शंकरम् । तस्या वलेपनं ज्ञात्वा क्रुद्धस्तु भगवान् हरः ॥ १-४३-६
- 'let me enter netherworld, indeed whisking Shiva with my streams.' Discerning her egotism God Shiva was infuriated, and . - ॥ 1-43-6॥
english translation
vizAmyahaM hi pAtAlaM strotasA gRhya zaMkaram । tasyA valepanaM jJAtvA kruddhastu bhagavAn haraH ॥ 1-43-6
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतिरोभावयितुं बुद्धिं चक्रे त्रिनयनस्तदा । सा तस्मिन् पतिता पुण्या पुण्ये रुद्रस्य मूर्धनि॥१-४३-७
- then the threeeyed Lord Shiva applied his intelligence to conceal her. She that holy River Ganga swooped down on the holy head of God Shiva - ॥ 1-43-7॥
english translation
tirobhAvayituM buddhiM cakre trinayanastadA । sA tasmin patitA puNyA puNye rudrasya mUrdhani॥1-43-7
hk transliteration by Sanscriptहिमवत्प्रतिमे राम जटामण्डलगह्वरे । सा कथञ्चिन्महीं गन्तुं नाशक्नोद्यत्नमास्थिता ॥१-४३-८
- oh ! Rama, which was the cavernous curls of matted hair-tufts resembling the mount Himavanta. Though she strove hard in one way or another to reach the earth that Ganga was rendered incapable - ॥ 1-43-8॥
english translation
himavatpratime rAma jaTAmaNDalagahvare । sA kathaJcinmahIM gantuM nAzaknodyatnamAsthitA ॥1-43-8
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनैव सा निर्गमं लेभे जटामण्डलमन्ततः । तत्रैवाबंभ्रमद्देवी संवत्सरगणान्बहून् ॥१-४३-९
- as she could not gain access for an outlet from any edge of the coils of matted hair-tufts of Shiva ( hence she was held there in durance vile ). Goddess Ganga whirled round and round in the coils of tufts alone for many number of years. ॥ 1-43-9॥
english translation
naiva sA nirgamaM lebhe jaTAmaNDalamantataH । tatraivAbaMbhramaddevI saMvatsaragaNAnbahUn ॥1-43-9
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतामपश्यन् पुनस्तत्र तपः परममास्थितः । स तेन तोषितश्चासीदत्यन्तं रघुनंदन ॥ १-४३-१०
When Ganga's emanation from those coils was intangible Bhageeratha again firmed up in a marvellous penance ( in the matter of her descent to earth ). Oh ! Son of the Raghus (Rama), immensely pleased with that ascesis of Bhageeratha - ॥ 1-43-10॥

tAmapazyan punastatra tapaH paramamAsthitaH । sa tena toSitazcAsIdatyantaM raghunaMdana ॥ 1-43-10
