गजेन्द्रो भगवत्स्पर्शाद्विमुक्तोऽज्ञानबन्धनात् । प्राप्तो भगवतो रूपं पीतवासाश्चतुर्भुजः ।। ८-४-६ ।।

sanskrit

Because Gajendra, King of the elephants, had been touched directly by the hands of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he was immediately freed of all material ignorance and bondage. Thus he received the salvation of sārūpya-mukti, in which he achieved the same bodily features as the Lord, being dressed in yellow garments and possessing four hands. ।। 8-4-6 ।।

english translation

चूँकि गजेन्द्र का प्रत्यक्ष स्पर्श भगवान् ने अपने करकमलों से किया था अतएव वह समस्त भौतिक अज्ञान तथा बन्धन से तुरन्त मुक्त हो गया। इस प्रकार उसे सारूप्य-मुक्ति प्राप्त हुई जिसमें उसे भगवान् जैसा ही शारीरिक स्वरूप प्राप्त हुआ। वह पीत वस्त्र धारण किये चार भुजाओं वाला बन गया। ।। ८-४-६ ।।

स वै पूर्वमभूद्राजा पाण्ड्यो द्रविडसत्तमः । इन्द्रद्युम्न इति ख्यातो विष्णुव्रतपरायणः ।। ८-४-७ ।।

sanskrit

This Gajendra had formerly been a Vaiṣṇava and the king of the country known as Pāṇḍya, which is in the province of Draviḍa [South India]. In his previous life, he was known as Indradyumna Mahārāja. ।। 8-4-7 ।।

english translation

यह गजेन्द्र पहले वैष्णव था और द्रविड़ (दक्षिण भारत) प्रान्त के पाण्डय नामक देश का राजा था। अपने पूर्व जन्म में वह इन्द्रद्युम्न महाराज कहलाता था। ।। ८-४-७ ।।

स एकदाऽऽराधनकाल आत्मवान् गृहीतमौनव्रत ईश्वरं हरिम् । जटाधरस्तापस आप्लुतोऽच्युतं समर्चयामास कुलाचलाश्रमः ।। ८-४-८ ।।

Indradyumna Mahārāja retired from family life and went to the Malaya Hills, where he had a small cottage for his āśrama. He wore matted locks on his head and always engaged in austerities. Once, while observing a vow of silence, he was fully engaged in the worship of the Lord and absorbed in the ecstasy of love of Godhead. ।। 8-4-8 ।।

english translation

इन्द्रद्युम्न महाराज ने गृहस्थ जीवन से वैराग्य ले लिया और मलय पर्वत चला गया जहाँ उसका आश्रम एक छोटी सी कुटिया के रूप में था। उसके सिर पर जटाएँ थीं और वह सदैव तपस्या में लगा रहता था। एक बार वह मौन व्रत धारण किये भगवान् की पूजा में तल्लीन था और भगवत्प्रेम के आनंद में डूबा हुआ था। ।। ८-४-८ ।।

यदृच्छया तत्र महायशा मुनिः समागमच्छिष्यगणैः परिश्रितः । तं वीक्ष्य तूष्णीमकृतार्हणादिकं रहस्युपासीनमृषिश्चुकोप ह ।। ८-४-९ ।।

While Indradyumna Mahārāja was engaged in ecstatic meditation, worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the great sage Agastya Muni arrived there, surrounded by his disciples. When the Muni saw that Mahārāja Indradyumna, who was sitting in a secluded place, remained silent and did not follow the etiquette of offering him a reception, he was very angry. ।। 8-4-9 ।।

english translation

जब इन्द्रद्युम्न महाराज भगवान् की पूजा करते हुए ध्यान में तल्लीन थे तो अगस्त्य मुनि अपनी शिष्य-मण्डली समेत वहाँ पधारे। जब मुनि ने देखा कि राजा इन्द्रद्युम्न एकान्त स्थान में बैठकर मौन साधे हैं और उनके स्वागत के शिष्टाचार का पालन नहीं कर रहे हैं, तो वे अत्यन्त क्रुद्ध हुए। ।। ८-४-९ ।।

तस्मा इमं शापमदादसाधु- रयं दुरात्माकृतबुद्धिरद्य । विप्रावमन्ता विशतां तमोऽन्धं यथा गजः स्तब्धमतिः स एव ।। ८-४-१० ।।

Agastya Muni then spoke this curse against the King: This King Indradyumna is not at all gentle. Being low and uneducated, he has insulted a brāhmaṇa. May he therefore enter the region of darkness and receive the dull, dumb body of an elephant. ।। 8-4-10 ।।

english translation

तब अगस्त्य मुनि ने राजा को यह शाप दे डाला—“इन्द्रद्युम्न तनिक भी भद्र नहीं है। नीच तथा अशिक्षित होने के कारण इसने ब्राह्मण का अपमान किया है। अतएव यह अंधकार प्रदेश में प्रवेश करे और आलसी मूक हाथी का शरीर प्राप्त करे।” ।। ८-४-१० ।।

tasmA imaM zApamadAdasAdhu- rayaM durAtmAkRtabuddhiradya | viprAvamantA vizatAM tamo'ndhaM yathA gajaH stabdhamatiH sa eva || 8-4-10 ||
