न त्वया भीरुणा योत्स्ये युधि विक्लवतेजसा । मथुरां स्वपुरीं त्यक्त्वा समुद्रं शरणं गतः ॥ १०-७२-३१ ॥
“But I will not fight with You, Kṛṣṇa, for You are a coward. Your strength abandoned You in the midst of battle, and You fled Your own capital of Mathurā to take shelter in the sea. ॥ 10-72-31 ॥

"लेकिन मैं तुमसे युद्ध नहीं करूंगा, कृष्ण, क्योंकि तुम कायर हो। आपकी ताकत ने आपको युद्ध के बीच में छोड़ दिया, और आप समुद्र में शरण लेने के लिए अपनी राजधानी मथुरा से भाग गए। ॥ १०-७२-३१ ॥

अयं तु वयसातुल्यो नातिसत्त्वो न मे समः । अर्जुनो न भवेद्योद्धा भीमस्तुल्यबलो मम ॥ १०-७२-३२ ॥
“As for this one, Arjuna, he is not as old as I, nor is he very strong. Since he is no match for me, he should not be the contender. Bhīma, however, is as strong as I am.” ॥ 10-72-32 ॥

“जहां तक इसकी बात है, अर्जुन, वह मेरे जितना बूढ़ा नहीं है, न ही वह बहुत मजबूत है। चूँकि उसका मुझसे कोई मुकाबला नहीं है, इसलिए उसे दावेदार नहीं होना चाहिए। हालाँकि, भीम भी उतना ही शक्तिशाली है जितना मैं हूँ।” ॥ १०-७२-३२ ॥

इत्युक्त्वा भीमसेनाय प्रादाय महतीं गदाम् । द्वितीयां स्वयमादाय निर्जगाम पुराद्बहिः ॥ १०-७२-३३ ॥
Having said this, Jarāsandha offered Bhīmasena a huge club, took up another himself and went outside the city. ॥ 10-72-33 ॥

The two heroes thus began battling each other on the level fighting grounds outside the city. Maddened with the fury of combat, they struck each other with their lightning-bolt-like clubs. ॥ 10-72-34 ॥

इस प्रकार दोनों नायक शहर के बाहर समतल युद्ध के मैदान में एक-दूसरे से लड़ने लगे। युद्ध के क्रोध से व्याकुल होकर, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे पर अपनी बिजली जैसी गदाओं से प्रहार किया। ॥ १०-७२-३४ ॥
