    जिह्मप्रायं व्यवहृतं शाठ्यमिश्रं च सौहृदम् । पितृमातृसुहृद्भ्रातृदम्पतीनां च कल्कनम् ।। १-१४-४ ।।jihmaprAyaM vyavahRtaM zAThyamizraM ca sauhRdam | pitRmAtRsuhRdbhrAtRdampatInAM ca kalkanam || 1-14-4 ||All ordinary transactions and dealings became polluted with cheating, even between friends. And in familial affairs, there was always misunderstanding between fathers, mothers and sons, between well-wishers, and between brothers. Even between husband and wife there was always strain and quarrel. ।। 1-14-4 ।।

    कालस्य च गतिं रौद्रां विपर्यस्तर्तुधर्मिणः । पापीयसीं नृणां वार्तां क्रोधलोभानृतात्मनाम् ।। १-१४-३ ।।kAlasya ca gatiM raudrAM viparyastartudharmiNaH | pApIyasIM nRNAM vArtAM krodhalobhAnRtAtmanAm || 1-14-3 ||He saw that the direction of eternal time had changed, and this was very fearful. There were disruptions in the seasonal regularities. The people in general had become very greedy, angry and deceitful. And he saw that they were adopting foul means of livelihood. ।। 1-14-3 ।।

Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira then began to observe some inauspicious omens, which were fearful in themselves. ।। 1-14-2 ।।

    इत्युक्त्वाथारुहत्स्वर्गं नारदः सहतुम्बुरुः । युधिष्ठिरो वचस्तस्य हृदि कृत्वाजहाच्छुचः ।। १-१३-५९ ।।ityuktvAthAruhatsvargaM nAradaH sahatumburuH | yudhiSThiro vacastasya hRdi kRtvAjahAcchucaH || 1-13-59 ||Having spoken thus, the great sage Nārada, along with his vīṇā, ascended into outer space. Yudhiṣṭhira kept his instruction in his heart and so was able to get rid of all lamentations. ।। 1-13-59 ।।

    विदुरस्तु तदाश्चर्यं निशाम्य कुरुनन्दन । हर्षशोकयुतस्तस्माद्गन्ता तीर्थनिषेवकः ।। १-१३-५८ ।।vidurastu tadAzcaryaM nizAmya kurunandana | harSazokayutastasmAdgantA tIrthaniSevakaH || 1-13-58 ||Vidura, being affected with delight and grief, will then leave that place of sacred pilgrimage. ।। 1-13-58 ।।

    दह्यमानेऽग्निभिर्देहे पत्युः पत्नी सहोटजे । बहिः स्थिता पतिं साध्वी तमग्निमनुवेक्ष्यति ।। १-१३-५७ ।।dahyamAne'gnibhirdehe patyuH patnI sahoTaje | bahiH sthitA patiM sAdhvI tamagnimanuvekSyati || 1-13-57 ||While outside observing her husband, who will burn in the fire of mystic power along with his thatched cottage, his chaste wife will enter the fire with rapt attention. ।। 1-13-57 ।।

    स वा अद्यतनाद्राजन् परतः पञ्चमेऽहनि । कलेवरं हास्यति स्वं तच्च भस्मीभविष्यति ।। १-१३-५६ ।।sa vA adyatanAdrAjan parataH paJcame'hani | kalevaraM hAsyati svaM tacca bhasmIbhaviSyati || 1-13-56 ||O King, he will quit his body, most probably on the fifth day from today. And his body will turn to ashes. ।। 1-13-56 ।।
