    मार्जनं यज्ञपात्राणां पाणिना यज्ञकर्मणि । चमसानां ग्रहाणां च शुद्धिः प्रक्षालनेन तु ॥ ११६ ॥mArjanaM yajJapAtrANAM pANinA yajJakarmaNi । camasAnAM grahANAM ca zuddhiH prakSAlanena tu ॥ 116 ॥At sacrifices the purification of (the Soma cups called) Kamasas and Grahas, and of (other) sacrificial vessels (takes place) by rubbing (them) with the hand, and (afterwards) rinsing (them with water).

    द्रवाणां चैव सर्वेषां शुद्धिरुत्पवनं स्मृतम् । प्रोक्षणं संहतानां च दारवाणां च तक्षणम् ॥ ११५ ॥dravANAM caiva sarveSAM zuddhirutpavanaM smRtam । prokSaNaM saMhatAnAM ca dAravANAM ca takSaNam ॥ 115 ॥The purification prescribed for all (sorts of) liquids is by passing two blades of Kusa grass through them, for solid things by sprinkling (them with water), for (objects) made of wood by planing them.

I shall not do what others have not done before, seeking what is virtuous. How could there be any good in such actions?"' ॥ 1-88-4 ॥

Once our conversation concludes, I shall proceed there."' ॥ 1-87-6 ॥

Yet, while he resides in the forest, the village remains metaphorically behind him."' ॥ 1-86-11 ॥

    [आ] यदा तु तान वितुदन्ते वयांसि; तथा गृध्राः शितिकण्ठाः पतंगाः कथं भवन्ति कथम आभवन्ति; न भौमम अन्यं नरकं शृणॊमि ॥ १-८५-६ ॥[A] yadA tu tAna vitudante vayAMsi; tathA gRdhrAH zitikaNThAH pataMgAH kathaM bhavanti kathama Abhavanti; na bhaumama anyaM narakaM zRNòmi ॥ 1-85-6 ॥'Ashtaka spoke, "As life fades with age, vultures, peacocks, insects, and worms consume the human body. Where does man then dwell? How does he return to life? I have never heard of any earthly hell called Bhauma!"' ॥ 1-85-6 ॥

    [य] इमं भौमं नरकं ते पतन्ति; लालप्यमाना नरदेव सर्वे ते कङ्कगॊमायु बलाशनार्थं; कषीणा विवृद्धिं बहुधा वरजन्ति ॥ १-८५-४ ॥[ya] imaM bhaumaM narakaM te patanti; lAlapyamAnA naradeva sarve te kaGkagòmAyu balAzanArthaM; kaSINA vivRddhiM bahudhA varajanti ॥ 1-85-4 ॥'Yayati explained, "All these human-like gods, overwhelmed by desire, fall into this earthly hell. Driven by cravings for sensory pleasures and sustenance, they forsake their growth, which leads to their decline in various ways."' ॥ 1-85-4 ॥

    [य] जञातिः सुहृत सवजनॊ यॊ यथेह; कषीणे वित्ते तयज्यते मानवैर हि तथा तत्र कषीणपुण्यं मनुष्यं; तयजन्ति सद्यः सेश्वरा देवसंघाः ॥ १-८५-२ ॥[ya] jaJAtiH suhRta savajanò yò yatheha; kaSINe vitte tayajyate mAnavaira hi tathA tatra kaSINapuNyaM manuSyaM; tayajanti sadyaH sezvarA devasaMghAH ॥ 1-85-2 ॥'Yayati replied, "Just as relatives, friends, and kin abandon someone in this world when their wealth runs out, similarly, in the celestial realms, the gods, led by Indra, abandon those whose merits have been exhausted."' ॥ 1-85-2 ॥
