अपिबत्तु जलं सर्वं गङ्गायाः परमाद्भुतम् । ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वा ऋषयश्च सुविस्मिताः ॥ १-४३-३६
- And astonishingly drank the entire waters of Ganga. Then devatas, rishis and gandharvas stood amazed (at this act). - ॥ 1-43-36॥
english translation
apibattu jalaM sarvaM gaGgAyAH paramAdbhutam । tato devAH sagandharvA RSayazca suvismitAH ॥ 1-43-36
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपूजयन्ति महात्मानं जह्नुं पुरुषसत्तमम् । गङ्गां चापि नयन्ति स्म दुहितृत्वे महात्मनः ॥ १-४३-३७
- They worshipped the magnanimous Jahnu, noblest among men. The devatas entreated the illustrious Jahnu to treat Ganga as his daughter. ॥ 1-43-37॥
english translation
pUjayanti mahAtmAnaM jahnuM puruSasattamam । gaGgAM cApi nayanti sma duhitRtve mahAtmanaH ॥ 1-43-37
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततस्तुष्टो महातेजाः श्रोत्राभ्यामसृजत् प्रभुः । तस्माज्जह्नुसुता गङ्गा प्रोच्यते जाह्नवीति च ॥ १-४३-३८
Then that greatly radiant and godly sage Jahnu was delighted and released Ganga from both of his ears. Therefore Ganga became the daughter of sage Jahnu, and she is also renowned as Jahnavi, after the name of that sage. ॥ 1-43-38॥

tatastuSTo mahAtejAH zrotrAbhyAmasRjat prabhuH । tasmAjjahnusutA gaGgA procyate jAhnavIti ca ॥ 1-43-38
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजगाम च पुनर्गङ्गा भगीरथरथानुगा । सागरं चापि संप्राप्ता सा सरित्प्रवरा तदा ॥१-४३-३९
Even though Ganga best among rivers, again proceeded moving behind the chariot of Bhageeratha and reached the ocean - ॥ 1-43-39॥

jagAma ca punargaGgA bhagIratharathAnugA । sAgaraM cApi saMprAptA sA saritpravarA tadA ॥1-43-39
hk transliteration by Sanscriptरसातलमुपागच्छत् सिद्ध्यर्थं तस्य कर्मणः । भगीरथोऽपि रजार्षिर्गङ्गामादाय यत्नतः ॥ १-४३-४०
- she entered the nether regions of the earth in order to fulfil his mission (salvation of the sons of Sagara). Even kingly-sage Bhageeratha making every effort ushered Ganga to netherworld - ॥ 1-43-40॥

rasAtalamupAgacchat siddhyarthaM tasya karmaNaH । bhagIratho'pi rajArSirgaGgAmAdAya yatnataH ॥ 1-43-40
