ददौ धर्मेण हिमवांस्तनयां लोकपावनीम् । स्वच्छंदपथगां गंगां त्रैलोक्यहितकाम्यया ॥ १-३५-१८
In order to do good to the three worlds Himavan, rooted in dharma gifted his eldest daughter Ganga who sanctifies the whole world by flowing at her free will. ॥ 1-35-18॥

dadau dharmeNa himavAMstanayAM lokapAvanIm । svacchaMdapathagAM gaMgAM trailokyahitakAmyayA ॥ 1-35-18
