अथैतत्पूर्णमभ्यात्मं यच्च नेत्यनृतं वचः । सर्वं नेत्यनृतं ब्रूयात्स दुष्कीर्तिः श्वसन् मृतः ।। ८-१९-४२ ।।

Therefore, the safe course is to say no. Although it is a falsehood, it protects one completely, it draws the compassion of others toward oneself, and it gives one full facility to collect money from others for oneself. Nonetheless, if one always pleads that he has nothing, he is condemned, for he is a dead body while living, or while still breathing he should be killed. ।। 8-19-42 ।।

english translation

अतएव सुरक्षित उपाय है कि ‘नहीं’ कह दिया जाये। यद्यपि यह असत्य है, किन्तु इससे पूरी रक्षा हो जाती है, इससे अपने प्रति दूसरों की सहानुभूति भी मिलती है और अपने लिए अन्यों से धन एकत्र करने में पूरी सुविधा मिलती है। फिर भी यदि कोई सदा यही कहे कि उसके पास कुछ नहीं है, तो उसकी निन्दा होती है क्योंकि वह जीवित रहकर भी मृत है या उसे जीवित ही मार डालना चाहिए। ।। ८-१९-४२ ।।
