तस्यां स चाम्भोरुहकर्णिकायामवस्थितो लोकमपश्यमानः । परिक्रमन् व्योम्नि विवृत्तनेत्रश्चत्वारि लेभेऽनुदिशं मुखानि ।। ३-८-१६ ।।

sanskrit

Brahmā, born out of the lotus flower, could not see the world, although he was situated in the whorl. He therefore circumambulated all of space, and while moving his eyes in all directions he achieved four heads in terms of the four directions. ।। 3-8-16 ।।

english translation

कमल के फूल से उत्पन्न हुए ब्रह्मा जगत को नहीं देख सके यद्यपि वे कोश में स्थित थे। अत: उन्होंने सारे अन्तरिक्ष की परिक्रमा की और सभी दिशाओं में अपनी आँखें घुमाते समय उन्होंने चार दिशाओं के रूप में चार सिर प्राप्त किये। ।। ३-८-१६ ।।

तस्माद्युगान्तश्वसनावघूर्णजलोर्मिचक्रात्सलिलाद्विरूढम् । उपाश्रितः कञ्जमु लोकतत्त्वं नात्मानमद्धाविददादिदेवः ।। ३-८-१७ ।।

sanskrit

Lord Brahmā, situated in that lotus, could not perfectly understand the creation, the lotus or himself. At the end of the millennium the air of devastation began to move the water and the lotus in great circular waves. ।। 3-8-17 ।।

english translation

उस कमल पर स्थित ब्रह्मा न तो सृष्टि को, न कमल को, न ही अपने आपको भलीभाँति समझ सके। युग के अन्त में प्रलय वायु जल तथा कमल को बड़ी-बड़ी भँवरों में हिलाने लगी। ।। ३-८-१७ ।।

क एष योऽसावहमब्जपृष्ठ एतत्कुतो वाब्जमनन्यदप्सु । अस्ति ह्यधस्तादिह किञ्चनैतदधिष्ठितं यत्र सता नु भाव्यम् ।। ३-८-१८ ।।

sanskrit

Lord Brahmā, in his ignorance, contemplated: Who am I that am situated on the top of this lotus? Wherefrom has it sprouted? There must be something downwards, and that from which this lotus has grown must be within the water. ।। 3-8-18 ।।

english translation

ब्रह्माजी ने अपनी अनभिज्ञता से विचार किया : इस कमल के ऊपर स्थित मैं कौन हूँ? यह (कमल) कहाँ से फूटकर निकला है? इसके नीचे कुछ अवश्य होना चाहिए और जिससे यह कमल निकला है उसे जल के भीतर होना चाहिए। ।। ३-८-१८ ।।

ka eSa yo'sAvahamabjapRSTha etatkuto vAbjamananyadapsu | asti hyadhastAdiha kiJcanaitadadhiSThitaM yatra satA nu bhAvyam || 3-8-18 ||

स इत्थमुद्वीक्ष्य तदब्जनालनाडीभिरन्तर्जलमाविवेश । नार्वाग्गतस्तत्खरनालनालनाभिं विचिन्वंस्तदविन्दताजः ।। ३-८-१९ ।।

sanskrit

Lord Brahmā, thus contemplating, entered the water through the channel of the stem of the lotus. But in spite of entering the stem and going nearer to the navel of Viṣṇu, he could not trace out the root. ।। 3-8-19 ।।

english translation

इस तरह विचार करते हुए ब्रह्माजी कमल नाल के रन्ध्रों (छिद्रों) से होकर जल के भीतर प्रविष्ट हुए। किन्तु नाल में प्रविष्ट होकर तथा विष्णु की नाभि के निकटतम जाकर भी वे जड़ (मूल) का पता नहीं लगा पाये। ।। ३-७-१९ ।।

sa itthamudvIkSya tadabjanAlanADIbhirantarjalamAviveza | nArvAggatastatkharanAlanAlanAbhiM vicinvaMstadavindatAjaH || 3-8-19 ||

तमस्यपारे विदुरात्मसर्गं विचिन्वतोऽभूत्सुमहांस्त्रिणेमिः । यो देहभाजां भयमीरयाणः परिक्षिणोत्यायुरजस्य हेतिः ।। ३-८-२० ।।

sanskrit

O Vidura, while searching in that way about his existence, Brahmā reached his ultimate time, which is the eternal wheel in the hand of Viṣṇu and which generates fear in the mind of the living entity like the fear of death. ।। 3-8-20 ।।

english translation

हे विदुर, अपने अस्तित्व के विषय में इस तरह खोज करते हुए ब्रह्मा अपने चरमकाल में पहुँच गये, जो विष्णु के हाथों में शाश्वत चक्र है और जो जीव के मन में मृत्यु-भय की भ्रान्ति भय उत्पन्न करता है। ।। ३-८-२० ।।

tamasyapAre vidurAtmasargaM vicinvato'bhUtsumahAMstriNemiH | yo dehabhAjAM bhayamIrayANaH parikSiNotyAyurajasya hetiH || 3-8-20 ||
