उद्धव उवाच ननु ते तत्त्वसंराध्य ऋषिः कौषारवोऽन्ति मे । साक्षाद्भगवताऽऽदिष्टो मर्त्यलोकं जिहासता ॥ ३-४-२६ ॥
Śrī Uddhava said: You may take lessons from the great learned sage Maitreya, who is nearby and who is worshipable for reception of transcendental knowledge. He was directly instructed by the Personality of Godhead while He was about to quit this mortal world. ॥ 3-4-26 ॥

श्री उद्धव ने कहा : आप महान् विद्वान ऋषि मैत्रेय से शिक्षा ले सकते हैं, जो पास ही में हैं और जो दिव्य ज्ञान की प्राप्ति के लिए पूजनीय हैं। जब भगवान् इस मर्त्यलोक को छोडऩे वाले थे तब उन्होंने मैत्रेय को प्रत्यक्ष रूप से शिक्षा दी थी। ॥ ३-४-२६ ॥

श्रीशुक उवाच इति सह विदुरेण विश्वमूर्तेर्गुणकथया सुधया प्लावितोरुतापः । क्षणमिव पुलिने यमस्वसुस्तां समुषित औपगविर्निशां ततोऽगात् ॥ ३-४-२७ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O King, after thus discussing with Vidura the transcendental name, fame, qualities, etc., on the bank of the Yamunā, Uddhava was overwhelmed with great affliction. He passed the night as if it were a moment, and thereafter he went away. ॥ 3-4-27 ॥

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे राजन्, इस तरह यमुना नदी के तट पर विदुर से (भगवान् के) दिव्य नाम, यश, गुण इत्यादि की चर्चा करने के बाद उद्धव अत्यधिक शोक से अभिभूत हो गये। उन्होंने सारी रात एक क्षण की तरह बिताई। तत्पश्चात् वे वहाँ से चले गये। ॥ ३-४-२७ ॥

राजोवाच निधनमुपगतेषु वृष्णिभोजेष्वधिरथयूथपयूथपेषु मुख्यः । स तु कथमवशिष्ट उद्धवो यद्धरिरपि तत्यज आकृतिं त्र्यधीशः ॥ ३-४-२८ ॥
The King inquired: At the end of the pastimes of the Lord of the three worlds, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, and after the disappearance of the members of the Vṛṣṇi and Bhoja dynasties, who were the best of the great commanders, why did Uddhava alone remain? ॥ 3-4-28 ॥

राजा ने पूछा : तीनों लोकों के स्वामी श्रीकृष्ण की लीलाओं के अन्त में तथा उन वृष्णि एवं भोज वंशों के सदस्यों के अन्तर्धान होने पर, जो महान् सेनानायकों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ थे, अकेले उद्धव क्यों बचे रहे? ॥ ३-४-२८ ॥

श्रीशुक उवाच ब्रह्मशापापदेशेन कालेनामोघवाञ्छितः । संहृत्य स्वकुलं नूनं त्यक्ष्यन् देहमचिन्तयत् ॥ ३-४-२९ ॥
Śukadeva Gosvāmī replied: My dear King, the cursing of the brāhmaṇas was only a plea, but the actual fact was the supreme desire of the Lord. He wanted to disappear from the face of the earth after dispatching His excessively numerous family members. He thought to Himself as follows. ॥ 3-4-29 ॥

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने उत्तर दिया : हे प्रिय राजन्, ब्राह्मण का शाप तो केवल एक बहाना था, किन्तु वास्तविक तथ्य तो भगवान् की परम इच्छा थी। वे अपने असंख्य पारिवारिक सदस्यों को भेज देने के बाद पृथ्वी के धरातल से अन्तर्धान हो जाना चाहते थे। उन्होंने अपने आप इस तरह सोचा। ॥ ३-४-२९ ॥

अस्माल्लोकादुपरते मयि ज्ञानं मदाश्रयम् । अर्हत्युद्धव एवाद्धा सम्प्रत्यात्मवतां वरः ॥ ३-४-३० ॥
Now I shall leave the vision of this mundane world, and I see that Uddhava, the foremost of My devotees, is the only one who can be directly entrusted with knowledge about Me. ॥ 3-4-30 ॥

अब मैं इस लौकिक जगत की दृष्टि से ओझल हो जाऊँगा और मैं समझता हूँ कि मेरे भक्तों में अग्रणी उद्धव ही एकमात्र ऐसा है, जिसे मेरे विषय का ज्ञान प्रत्यक्ष रूप से सौंपा जा सकता है। ॥ ३-४-३० ॥
