मृदुत्वं कठिनत्वं च शैत्यमुष्णत्वमेव च । एतत्स्पर्शस्य स्पर्शत्वं तन्मात्रत्वं नभस्वतः ।। ३-२६-३६ ।।

sanskrit

Softness and hardness and cold and heat are the distinguishing attributes of touch, which is characterized as the subtle form of air. ।। 3-26-36 ।।

english translation

कोमलता तथा कठोरता एवं शीतलता तथा उष्णता—ये स्पर्श को बताने वाले लक्षण हैं, जिन्हें वायु के सूक्ष्म रूप में लक्षित किया जाता है। ।। ३-२६-३६ ।।

चालनं व्यूहनं प्राप्तिर्नेतृत्वं द्रव्यशब्दयोः । सर्वेन्द्रियाणामात्मत्वं वायोः कर्माभिलक्षणम् ।। ३-२६-३७ ‌‌।।

sanskrit

The action of the air is exhibited in movements, mixing, allowing approach to the objects of sound and other sense perceptions, and providing for the proper functioning of all other senses. ।। 3-26-37 ।।

english translation

गतियों, मिश्रण, शब्द को पदार्थों तथा अन्य इन्द्रिय बोधों तक पहुँचाने एवं अन्य समस्त इन्द्रियों के समुचित कार्य करते रहने के लिए सुविधाएँ प्रदान कराने में वायु की क्रिया लक्षित होती है। ।। ३-२६-३७ ।।

वायोश्च स्पर्शतन्मात्राद्रूपं दैवेरितादभूत् । समुत्थितं ततस्तेजश्चक्षू रूपोपलम्भनम् ।। ३-२६-३८ ‌‌।।

sanskrit

By interactions of the air and the sensations of touch, one receives different forms according to destiny. By evolution of such forms, there is fire, and the eye sees different forms in color. ।। 3-26-38 ।।

english translation

वायु तथा स्पर्श तन्मात्राओं की अन्त:क्रियाओं से मनुष्य को भाग्य के अनुसार विभिन्न रूप दिखते हैं। ऐसे रूपों के विकास के फलस्वरूप अग्नि उत्पन्न हुई और आँखें विविध रंगीन रूपों को देखती हैं। ।। ३-२६-३८ ।।

My dear mother, the characteristics of form are understood by dimension, quality and individuality. The form of fire is appreciated by its effulgence. ।। 3-26-39 ।।

हे माता, रूप के लक्षण आकार-प्रकार, गुण तथा व्यष्टि से जाने जाते हैं। अग्नि का रूप उसके तेज से जाना जाता है। ।। ३-२६-३९ ।।

द्योतनं पचनं पानमदनं हिममर्दनम् । तेजसो वृत्तयस्त्वेताः शोषणं क्षुत्तृडेव च ।। ३-२६-४० ।।

Fire is appreciated by its light and by its ability to cook, to digest, to destroy cold, to evaporate, and to give rise to hunger, thirst, eating and drinking. ।। 3-26-40 ।।

english translation

अग्नि अपने प्रकाश के कारण पकाने, पचाने, शीत नष्ट करने, भाप बनाने की क्षमता के कारण एवं भूख, प्यास, खाने तथा पीने की इच्छा उत्पन्न करने के कारण अनुभव की जाती है। ।। ३-२६-४० ।।
