स वर्षपूगानुदधौ महाबल- श्चरन्महोर्मीञ्छ्वसनेरितान् मुहुः । मौर्व्याभिजघ्ने गदया विभावरीमासेदिवांस्तात पुरीं प्रचेतसः ॥ ३-१७-२६ ॥
Moving about in the ocean for many, many years, the mighty Hiraṇyākṣa smote the gigantic wind-tossed waves again and again with his iron mace and reached Vibhāvarī, the capital of Varuṇa. ॥ 3-17-26 ॥

हे विदुर, वह महाबली हिरण्याक्ष अनेकानेक वर्षों तक समुद्र में घूमता हुआ वायु से दोलायमान उत्ताल तरंगों पर अपनी लोहे की गदा से बारम्बार प्रहार करता हुआ वरुण की राजधानी विभावरी में जा पहुँचा। ॥ ३-१७-२६ ॥

तत्रोपलभ्यासुरलोकपालकं यादोगणानामृषभं प्रचेतसम् । स्मयन् प्रलब्धुं प्रणिपत्य नीचवज्जगादमे देह्यधिराज संयुगम् ॥ ३-१७-२७ ॥
Vibhāvarī is the home of Varuṇa, lord of the aquatic creatures and guardian of the lower regions of the universe, where the demons generally reside. There Hiraṇyākṣa fell at Varuṇa’s feet like a lowborn man, and to make fun of him he said with a smile, “Give me battle, O Supreme Lord!” ॥ 3-17-27 ॥

विभावरी वरुण की पुरी है और वरुण समस्त जलचरों का स्वामी तथा ब्रह्माण्ड के अध: क्षेत्रों का रक्षक है, जहाँ सामान्य रूप से असुर वास करते हैं। वहाँ पहुँचकर हिरण्याक्ष नीच पुरुष के समान वरुण के चरणों पर गिर पड़ा और उसकी हँसी उड़ाने के लिए उसने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा, “हे परमेश्वर, मुझे युद्ध की भिक्षा दीजिये।” ॥ ३-१७-२७ ॥

त्वं लोकपालोऽधिपतिर्बृहच्छ्रवा वीर्यापहो दुर्मदवीरमानिनाम् । विजित्य लोकेऽखिलदैत्यदानवान् यद्राजसूयेन पुरायजत्प्रभो ॥ ३-१७-२८ ॥
You are the guardian of an entire sphere and a ruler of wide fame. Having crushed the might of arrogant and conceited warriors and having conquered all the Daityas and Dānavas in the world, you once performed a Rājasūya sacrifice to the Lord. ॥ 3-17-28 ॥

आप समस्त गोलक के रक्षक तथा अत्यन्त कीर्तिवान शासक हैं। आपने अहंकारी तथा मोहग्रस्त वीरों के दर्प को दल कर तथा इस संसार के सभी दैत्यों तथा दानवों को जीत कर भगवान् के हेतु एक बार राजसूय यज्ञ सम्पन्न किया था। ॥ ३-१७-२८ ॥

स एवमुत्सिक्तमदेन विद्विषा दृढं प्रलब्धो भगवानपाम्पतिः । रोषं समुत्थं शमयन् स्वया धिया व्यवोचदङ्गोपशमं गता वयम् ॥ ३-१७-२९ ॥
Thus mocked by an enemy whose vanity knew no bounds, the worshipful lord of the waters waxed angry, but by dint of his reason he managed to curb the anger that had sprung up in him, and he replied: O dear one, we have now desisted from warfare, having grown too old for combat. ॥ 3-17-29 ॥

अत्यन्त दंभी शत्रु के द्वारा इस प्रकार उपहास किये जाने पर जल के पूज्य स्वामी को क्रोध तो आया, किन्तु तर्क के बल पर वे उस क्रोध को पी गये और उन्होंने इस प्रकार उत्तर दिया—हे प्रिय, युद्ध के लिए अत्यधिक बूढ़ा होने के कारण अब मैं युद्ध से दूर रहता हूँ। ॥ ३-१७-२९ ॥

पश्यामि नान्यं पुरुषात्पुरातनात् यः संयुगे त्वां रणमार्गकोविदम् । आराधयिष्यत्यसुरर्षभेहि तं मनस्विनो यं गृणते भवादृशाः ॥ ३-१७-३० ॥
You are so skilled in war that I do not see anyone else but the most ancient person, Lord Viṣṇu, who can give satisfaction in battle to you. Therefore, O chief of the asuras, approach Him, whom even heroes like you mention with praise. ॥ 3-17-30 ॥
english translation
तुम युद्ध में इतने कुशल हो कि मुझे परम पुरातन पुरुष भगवान् विष्णु के अतिरिक्त कोई ऐसा नहीं दिखता, जो तुम्हें युद्ध में तुष्टि प्रदान कर सके। अत: हे असुरश्रेष्ठ, तुम उन्हीं के पास जाओ, जिनकी तुम जैसे योद्धा भी बड़ाई करते हैं। ॥ ३-१७-३० ॥
