तं वीक्ष्य दुःसहजवं रणत्काञ्चननूपुरम् । वैजयन्त्या स्रजा जुष्टमंसन्यस्तमहागदम् ।। ३-१७-२१ ।।

Hiraṇyākṣa’s temper was difficult to control. He had anklets of gold tinkling about his feet, he was adorned with a gigantic garland, and he rested his huge mace on one of his shoulders. ।। 3-17-21 ।।

english translation

हिरण्याक्ष के आवेग को नियंत्रण कर पाना कठिन था। उसके पैरों में सोने के नूपुरों की झनकार हो रही थी, उसके गले में विशाल माला सुशोभित थी और वह अपनी विशाल गदा को अपने एक कंधे पर धारण किये था। ।। ३-१७-२१ ।।

मनोवीर्यवरोत्सिक्तमसृण्यमकुतोभयम् । भीता निलिल्यिरे देवास्तार्क्ष्यत्रस्ता इवाहयः ।। ३-१७-२२ ।।

His mental and bodily strength as well as the boon conferred upon him had made him proud. He feared death at the hands of no one, and there was no checking him. The gods, therefore, were seized with fear at his very sight, and they hid themselves even as snakes hide themselves for fear of Garuḍa. ।। 3-17-22 ।।

english translation

उसके मनोबल, शारीरिक बल तथा ब्रह्मा द्वारा प्राप्त वरदान ने उसे दंभी बना दिया था। उसे न तो किसी से अपनी मृत्यु का भय था और न उस पर किसी का अंकुश था। अत: देवता उसे देखकर ही भयभीत हो उठते थे और अपने को उसी प्रकार छिपा लेते जिस तरह गरुड़ के भय से सर्प छिप जाते हैं। ।। ३-१७-२२ ।।

स वै तिरोहितान् दृष्ट्वा महसा स्वेन दैत्यराट् । सेन्द्रान् देवगणान् क्षीबानपश्यन् व्यनदद्भृशम् ।। ३-१७-२३ ।।

On not finding Indra and the other demigods, who had previously been intoxicated with power, the chief of the Daityas, seeing that they had all vanished before his might, roared loudly. ।। 3-17-23 ।।

english translation

पहले अपनी शक्ति के मद से चूर रहने वाले इन्द्र तथा अन्य देवताओं को अपने समक्ष न पाकर तथा यह देखकर कि उसकी शक्ति के सम्मुख वे सभी छिप गये हैं, उस दैत्यराज ने गम्भीर गर्जना की। ।। ३-१७-२३ ।।

ततो निवृत्तः क्रीडिष्यन् गम्भीरं भीमनिःस्वनम् । विजगाहे महासत्त्वो वार्धिं मत्त इव द्विपः ।। ३-१७-२४ ।।

After returning from the heavenly kingdom, the mighty demon, who was like an elephant in wrath, for the sake of sport dived into the deep ocean, which was roaring terribly. ।। 3-17-24 ।।

स्वर्गलोक से लौटने के बाद मतवाले हाथी के समान उस महाबली असुर ने भयानक गर्जना करते हुए गहरे समुद्र में क्रीड़ावश डुबकी लगाई। ।। ३-१७-२४ ।।

तस्मिन् प्रविष्टे वरुणस्य सैनिका यादोगणाः सन्नधियः ससाध्वसाः । अहन्यमाना अपि तस्य वर्चसा प्रधर्षिता दूरतरं प्रदुद्रुवुः ।। ३-१७-२५ ।।

On his entering the ocean, the aquatic animals who formed the host of Varuṇa were stricken with fear and ran far away. Thus Hiraṇyākṣa showed his splendor without dealing a blow. ।। 3-17-25 ।।

english translation

समुद्र में उसके प्रवेश करते ही वरुण के सैनिक समस्त जलचर प्राणी डर गये और बहुत दूर भाग गये। इस प्रकार बिना वार किये ही हिरण्याक्ष ने अपनी धाक जमा ली। ।। ३-१७-२५ ।।
