आत्मा ज्ञानमयः शुद्धो व्यतिरिक्तोऽगुणान्वयः । सुषुप्तिस्वप्नजाग्रद्भिर्मायावृत्तिभिरीयते ॥ १०-४७-३१ ॥
Being composed of pure consciousness, or knowledge, the soul is distinct from everything material and is uninvolved in the entanglements of the modes of nature. We can perceive the soul through the three functions of material nature known as wakefulness, sleep and deep sleep. ॥ 10-47-31 ॥

शुद्ध चेतना या ज्ञान से युक्त होने से आत्मा प्रत्येक भौतिक वस्तु से पृथक् है और प्रकृति के गुणों के पाश से अलिप्त है। आत्मा का अनुभव भौतिक प्रकृति के तीन कार्यों के माध्यम से किया जा सकता है—ये हैं जाग्रत, स्वप्न तथा सुषुप्ति। ॥ १०-४७-३१ ॥
