देवे वर्षति यज्ञविप्लवरुषा वज्राश्मपर्षानिलैः सीदत्पालपशुस्त्रि आत्मशरणं दृष्ट्वानुकम्प्युत्स्मयन् । उत्पाट्यैककरेण शैलमबलो लीलोच्छिलीन्ध्रं यथा बिभ्रद्गोष्ठमपान्महेन्द्रमदभित्प्रीयान्न इन्द्रो गवाम् ।। १०-२६-२५ ।।

Indra became angry when his sacrifice was disrupted, and thus he caused rain and hail to fall on Gokula, accompanied by lightning and powerful winds, all of which brought great suffering to the cowherds, animals and women there. When Lord Kṛṣṇa, who is by nature always compassionate, saw the condition of those who had only Him as their shelter, He smiled broadly and lifted Govardhana Hill with one hand, just as a small child picks up a mushroom to play with it. Holding up the hill, He protected the cowherd community. May He, Govinda, the Lord of the cows and the destroyer of Indra’s false pride, be pleased with us. ।। 10-26-25 ।।

english translation

अपना यज्ञ भंग किये जाने पर इन्द्र क्रोधित हुआ और उसने गोकुल पर वर्षा की तथा वज्रपात और तेज हवा के साथ साथ ओले गिराये जिनसे गौवों, पशुओं तथा स्त्रियों को अतीव कष्ट हुआ। जब दयालु प्रकृति वाले भगवान् कृष्ण ने उन सबों की यह दशा देखी जिनके उन्हें छोडक़र कोई दूसरी शरण नहीं थी तो वे मन्द-मन्द हँसने लगे और एक हाथ से उन्होंने गोवर्धन पर्वत को उठा लिया जिस तरह कोई छोटा सा बालक खेलने के लिए कुकुरमुत्ते को उखाड़ लेता है। इस तरह से उन्होंने ग्वाल-समुदाय की रक्षा की। गौवों के स्वामी तथा इन्द्र के मिथ्या गर्व को खंडित करने वाले वे ही गोविन्द हम सबों पर प्रसन्न हों। ।। १०-२६-२५ ।।
