Rama he practised unprecedented and extremely difficult austerities. ॥ 1-65-2॥

    अथ हैमवतीं राम दिशं त्यक्त्वा महामुनिः । पूर्वां दिशमनुप्राप्य तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥ १-६५-१atha haimavatIM rAma dizaM tyaktvA mahAmuniH । pUrvAM dizamanuprApya tapastepe sudAruNam ॥ 1-65-1Oh ! Rama thereafter the great ascetic (Vishvaamitra), abandoning the snowbound Himalayas on north reached the eastern quarter and performed rigorous austerities. ॥ 1-65-1॥

Oh ! Descendant of Raghu in this way that eminent ascetic took an unprecedented vow to practise penance for a thousand years. (Thus Shataananda continued. ) ॥ 1-64-20॥
