He saved Mahārāja Parīkṣit, who was bitten by the snake of material existence. ॥ 12-13-21 ॥

Indeed, the evening sky, glowing with the light of the rising moon, became the very face of spring, and sprouts and fresh blossoms virtually covered the multitude of trees and creepers. ॥ 12-8-21 ॥

    घटे भिन्ने यथाऽऽकाश आकाशः स्याद्यथा पुरा । एवं देहे मृते जीवो ब्रह्म सम्पद्यते पुनः ॥ १२-५-५ ॥ghaTe bhinne yathA''kAza AkAzaH syAdyathA purA । evaM dehe mRte jIvo brahma sampadyate punaH ॥ 12-5-5 ॥When a pot is broken, the portion of sky within the pot remains as the element sky, just as before. In the same way, when the gross and subtle bodies die, the living entity within resumes his spiritual identity. ॥ 12-5-5 ॥

    स्वप्ने यथा शिरश्छेदं पञ्चत्वाद्यात्मनः स्वयम् । यस्मात्पश्यति देहस्य तत आत्मा ह्यजोऽमरः ॥ १२-५-४ ॥svapne yathA zirazchedaM paJcatvAdyAtmanaH svayam । yasmAtpazyati dehasya tata AtmA hyajo'maraH ॥ 12-5-4 ॥In a dream one can see his own head being cut off and thus understand that his actual self is standing apart from the dream experience. Similarly, while awake one can see that his body is a product of the five material elements. Therefore it is to be understood that the actual self, the soul, is distinct from the body it observes and is unborn and immortal. ॥ 12-5-4 ॥

    यं मातापितरौ क्लेशं सहेते सम्भवे नृणाम् । न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ॥ २२७ ॥yaM mAtApitarau klezaM sahete sambhave nRNAm । na tasya niSkRtiH zakyA kartuM varSazatairapi ॥ 227 ॥That trouble (and pain) which the parents undergo on the birth of (their) children, cannot be compensated even in a hundred years.

    न भविष्यसि भूत्वा त्वं पुत्रपौत्रादिरूपवान् । बीजाङ्कुरवद्देहादेर्व्यतिरिक्तो यथानलः ॥ १२-५-३ ॥na bhaviSyasi bhUtvA tvaM putrapautrAdirUpavAn । bIjAGkuravaddehAdervyatirikto yathAnalaH ॥ 12-5-3 ॥You will not take birth again in the form of your sons and grandsons, like a sprout taking birth from a seed and then generating a new seed. Rather, you are entirely distinct from the material body and its paraphernalia, in the same way that fire is distinct from its fuel. ॥ १२-५-३ ॥

    त्वं तु राजन् मरिष्येति पशुबुद्धिमिमां जहि । न जातः प्रागभूतोऽद्य देहवत्त्वं न नङ्क्ष्यसि ॥ १२-५-२ ॥tvaM tu rAjan mariSyeti pazubuddhimimAM jahi । na jAtaH prAgabhUto'dya dehavattvaM na naGkSyasi ॥ 12-5-2 ॥O King, give up the animalistic mentality of thinking, “I am going to die.” Unlike the body, you have not taken birth. There was not a time in the past when you did not exist, and you are not about to be destroyed. ॥ 12-5-2 ॥

    सूर्येण ह्यभिनिर्मुक्तः शयानोऽभ्युदितश्च यः । प्रायश्चित्तमकुर्वाणो युक्तः स्यान् महतेनसा ॥ २२१ ॥sUryeNa hyabhinirmuktaH zayAno'bhyuditazca yaH । prAyazcittamakurvANo yuktaH syAn mahatenasA ॥ 221 ॥For he who lies (sleeping), while the sun sets or rises, and does not perform (that) penance, is tainted by great guilt.

    इत्येष मानवो वंशो यथा सङ्ख्यायते भुवि । तथा विट्‌शूद्रविप्राणां तास्ता ज्ञेया युगे युगे ॥ १२-२-३५ ॥ityeSa mAnavo vaMzo yathA saGkhyAyate bhuvi । tathA viT‌zUdraviprANAM tAstA jJeyA yuge yuge ॥ 12-2-35 ॥Thus I have described the royal dynasty of Manu, as it is known on this earth. One can similarly study the history of the vaiśyas, śūdras and brāhmaṇas living in the various ages. ॥ 12-2-35 ॥
