स्वप्ने यथा शिरश्छेदं पञ्चत्वाद्यात्मनः स्वयम् । यस्मात्पश्यति देहस्य तत आत्मा ह्यजोऽमरः ।। १२-५-४ ।।

sanskrit

In a dream one can see his own head being cut off and thus understand that his actual self is standing apart from the dream experience. Similarly, while awake one can see that his body is a product of the five material elements. Therefore it is to be understood that the actual self, the soul, is distinct from the body it observes and is unborn and immortal. ।। 12-5-4 ।।

english translation

सपने में कोई व्यक्ति अपना सिर कटता हुआ देख सकता है और इस तरह समझ सकता है कि उसका वास्तविक स्व स्वप्न के अनुभव से अलग खड़ा है। इसी प्रकार, जागते समय कोई भी देख सकता है कि उसका शरीर पाँच भौतिक तत्वों का एक उत्पाद है। इसलिए यह समझा जाना चाहिए कि वास्तविक स्व, आत्मा, उस शरीर से भिन्न है जिसे वह देखता है और अजन्मा और अमर है। ।। १२-५-४ ।।

svapne yathA zirazchedaM paJcatvAdyAtmanaH svayam | yasmAtpazyati dehasya tata AtmA hyajo'maraH || 12-5-4 ||
