    अहो कष्टं भ्रातर्व्यक्तमुरुपरिश्रान्तो दीर्घमध्वानमेक एव ऊहिवान् सुचिरं नातिपीवा न संहननाङ्गो जरसा चोपद्रुतो भवान् सखे नो एवापर एते सङ्घट्टिन इति बहु विप्रलब्धोऽप्यविद्यया रचितद्रव्यगुणकर्माशयस्वचरमकलेवरेऽवस्तुनि संस्थानविशेषेऽहम्ममेत्यनध्यारोपितमिथ्याप्रत्ययो ब्रह्मभूतस्तूष्णीं शिबिकां पूर्ववदुवाह ॥ ५-१०-६ ॥aho kaSTaM bhrAtarvyaktamuruparizrAnto dIrghamadhvAnameka eva UhivAn suciraM nAtipIvA na saMhananAGgo jarasA copadruto bhavAn sakhe no evApara ete saGghaTTina iti bahu vipralabdho'pyavidyayA racitadravyaguNakarmAzayasvacaramakalevare'vastuni saMsthAnavizeSe'hammametyanadhyAropitamithyApratyayo brahmabhUtastUSNIM zibikAM pUrvavaduvAha ॥ 5-10-6 ॥King Rahūgaṇa told Jaḍa Bharata: How troublesome this is, my dear brother. You certainly appear very fatigued because you have carried this palanquin alone without assistance for a long time and for a long distance. Besides that, due to your old age you have become greatly troubled. My dear friend, I see that you are not very firm, nor very strong and stout. Aren’t your fellow carriers cooperating with you? ॥ 5-10-6 ॥

    सांसर्गिको दोष एव नूनमेकस्यापि सर्वेषां सांसर्गिकाणां भवितुमर्हतीति निश्चित्य निशम्य कृपणवचो राजा रहूगण उपासितवृद्धोऽपि निसर्गेण बलात्कृत ईषदुत्थितमन्युरविस्पष्टब्रह्मतेजसं जातवेदसमिव रजसाऽऽवृतमतिराह ॥ ५-१०-५ ॥sAMsargiko doSa eva nUnamekasyApi sarveSAM sAMsargikANAM bhavitumarhatIti nizcitya nizamya kRpaNavaco rAjA rahUgaNa upAsitavRddho'pi nisargeNa balAtkRta ISadutthitamanyuravispaSTabrahmatejasaM jAtavedasamiva rajasA''vRtamatirAha ॥ 5-10-5 ॥King Rahūgaṇa could understand the speeches given by the carriers, who were afraid of being punished. He could also understand that simply due to the fault of one person, the palanquin was not being carried properly. Knowing this perfectly well and hearing their appeal, he became a little angry, although he was very advanced in political science and was very experienced. His anger arose due to his inborn nature as a king. Actually King Rahūgaṇa’s mind was covered by the mode of passion, and he therefore spoke as follows to Jaḍa Bharata, whose Brahman effulgence was not clearly visible, being covered like a fire covered by ashes. ॥ 5-10-5 ॥

    न वयं नरदेव प्रमत्ता भवन्नियमानुपथाः साध्वेव वहामः अयमधुनैव नियुक्तोऽपि न द्रुतं व्रजति नानेन सह वोढुमु ह वयं पारयाम इति ॥ ५-१०-४ ॥na vayaM naradeva pramattA bhavanniyamAnupathAH sAdhveva vahAmaH ayamadhunaiva niyukto'pi na drutaM vrajati nAnena saha voDhumu ha vayaM pArayAma iti ॥ 5-10-4 ॥O lord, please note that we are not at all negligent in discharging our duties. We have been faithfully carrying this palanquin according to your desire, but this man who has been recently engaged to work with us cannot walk very swiftly. Therefore we are not able to carry the palanquin with him. ॥ 5-10-4 ॥

    अथ त ईश्वरवचः सोपालम्भमुपाकर्ण्योपायतुरीयाच्छङ्कितमनसस्तं विज्ञापयां बभूवुः ॥ ५-१०-३ ॥atha ta IzvaravacaH sopAlambhamupAkarNyopAyaturIyAcchaGkitamanasastaM vijJApayAM babhUvuH ॥ 5-10-3 ॥When the palanquin carriers heard the threatening words of Mahārāja Rahūgaṇa, they became very afraid of his punishment and began to speak to him as follows. ॥ 5-10-3 ॥

    यदा हि द्विजवरस्येषुमात्रावलोकानुगतेर्न समाहिता पुरुषगतिस्तदा विषमगतां स्वशिबिकां रहूगण उपधार्य पुरुषानधिवहत आह हे वोढारः साध्वतिक्रमत किमिति विषममुह्यते यानमिति ॥ ५-१०-२ ॥yadA hi dvijavarasyeSumAtrAvalokAnugaterna samAhitA puruSagatistadA viSamagatAM svazibikAM rahUgaNa upadhArya puruSAnadhivahata Aha he voDhAraH sAdhvatikramata kimiti viSamamuhyate yAnamiti ॥ 5-10-2 ॥The palanquin, however, was very erratically carried by Jaḍa Bharata due to his sense of nonviolence. As he stepped forward, he checked before him every three feet to see whether he was about to step on ants. Consequently he could not keep pace with the other carriers. Due to this, the palanquin was shaking, and King Rahūgaṇa immediately asked the carriers, “Why are you carrying this palanquin unevenly? Better carry it properly.” ॥ 5-10-2 ॥

    श्रीशुक उवाच अथ सिन्धुसौवीरपते रहूगणस्य व्रजत इक्षुमत्यास्तटे तत्कुलपतिना शिबिकावाहपुरुषान्वेषणसमये दैवेनोपसादितः स द्विजवर उपलब्ध एष पीवा युवा संहननाङ्गो गोखरवद्धुरं वोढुमलमिति पूर्वविष्टिगृहीतैः सह गृहीतः प्रसभमतदर्ह उवाह शिबिकां स महानुभावः ॥ ५-१०-१ ॥zrIzuka uvAca atha sindhusauvIrapate rahUgaNasya vrajata ikSumatyAstaTe tatkulapatinA zibikAvAhapuruSAnveSaNasamaye daivenopasAditaH sa dvijavara upalabdha eSa pIvA yuvA saMhananAGgo gokharavaddhuraM voDhumalamiti pUrvaviSTigRhItaiH saha gRhItaH prasabhamatadarha uvAha zibikAM sa mahAnubhAvaH ॥ 5-10-1 ॥Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: My dear King, after this, King Rahūgaṇa, ruler of the states known as Sindhu and Sauvīra, was going to Kapilāśrama. When the King’s chief palanquin carriers reached the banks of the river Ikṣumatī, they needed another carrier. Therefore they began searching for someone, and by chance they came upon Jaḍa Bharata. They considered the fact that Jaḍa Bharata was very young and strong and had firm limbs. Like cows and asses, he was quite fit to carry loads. Thinking in this way, although the great soul Jaḍa Bharata was unfit for such work, they nonetheless unhesitatingly forced him to carry the palanquin. ॥ 5-10-1 ॥

    न वा एतद्विष्णुदत्त महदद्भुतं यदसम्भ्रमः स्वशिरश्च्छेदन आपतितेऽपि विमुक्तदेहाद्यात्मभावसुदृढहृदयग्रन्थीनां सर्वसत्त्वसुहृदात्मनां निर्वैराणां साक्षाद्भगवतानिमिषारिवरायुधेनाप्रमत्तेन तैस्तैर्भावैः परिरक्ष्यमाणानां तत्पादमूलमकुतश्चिद्भयमुपसृतानां भागवतपरमहंसानाम् ॥ ५-९-२० ॥na vA etadviSNudatta mahadadbhutaM yadasambhramaH svazirazcchedana Apatite'pi vimuktadehAdyAtmabhAvasudRDhahRdayagranthInAM sarvasattvasuhRdAtmanAM nirvairANAM sAkSAdbhagavatAnimiSArivarAyudhenApramattena taistairbhAvaiH parirakSyamANAnAM tatpAdamUlamakutazcidbhayamupasRtAnAM bhAgavataparamahaMsAnAm ॥ 5-9-20 ॥Śukadeva Gosvāmī then said to Mahārāja Parīkṣit: O Viṣṇudatta, those who already know that the soul is separate from the body, who are liberated from the invincible knot in the heart, who are always engaged in welfare activities for all living entities and who never contemplate harming anyone are always protected by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who carries His disc ॥ the Sudarśana cakra॥ and acts as supreme time to kill the demons and protect His devotees. The devotees always take shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord. Therefore at all times, even if threatened by decapitation, they remain unagitated. For them, this is not at all wonderful. ॥ 5-9-20 ॥

    भृशममर्षरोषावेशरभसविलसितभ्रुकुटिविटपकुटिलदंष्ट्रारुणेक्षणाटोपातिभयानकवदना हन्तुकामेवेदं महाट्टहासमतिसंरम्भेण विमुञ्चन्ती तत उत्पत्य पापीयसां दुष्टानां तेनैवासिना विवृक्णशीर्ष्णां गलात्स्रवन्तमसृगासवमत्युष्णं सह गणेन निपीयातिपानमदविह्वलोच्चैस्तरां स्वपार्षदैः सह जगौ ननर्त च विजहार च शिरः कन्दुकलीलया ॥ ५-९-१८ ॥bhRzamamarSaroSAvezarabhasavilasitabhrukuTiviTapakuTiladaMSTrAruNekSaNATopAtibhayAnakavadanA hantukAmevedaM mahATTahAsamatisaMrambheNa vimuJcantI tata utpatya pApIyasAM duSTAnAM tenaivAsinA vivRkNazIrSNAM galAtsravantamasRgAsavamatyuSNaM saha gaNena nipIyAtipAnamadavihvaloccaistarAM svapArSadaiH saha jagau nanarta ca vijahAra ca ziraH kandukalIlayA ॥ 5-9-18 ॥Intolerant of the offenses committed, the infuriated Goddess Kālī flashed her eyes and displayed her fierce, curved teeth. Her reddish eyes glowed, and she displayed her fearsome features. She assumed a frightening body, as if she were prepared to destroy the entire creation. Leaping violently from the altar, she immediately decapitated all the rogues and thieves with the very sword with which they had intended to kill Jaḍa Bharata. She then began to drink the hot blood that flowed from the necks of the beheaded rogues and thieves, as if this blood were liquor. Indeed, she drank this intoxicant with her associates, who were witches and female demons. Becoming intoxicated with this blood, they all began to sing very loudly and dance as though prepared to annihilate the entire universe. At the same time, they began to play with the heads of the rogues and thieves, tossing them about as if they were balls. ॥ 5-9-18 ॥

    इति तेषां वृषलानां रजस्तमःप्रकृतीनां धनमदरज उत्सिक्तमनसां भगवत्कलावीरकुलं कदर्थीकृत्योत्पथेन स्वैरं विहरतां हिंसाविहाराणां कर्मातिदारुणं यद्ब्रह्मभूतस्य साक्षाद्ब्रह्मर्षिसुतस्य निर्वैरस्य सर्वभूतसुहृदः सूनायामप्यननुमतमालम्भनं तदुपलभ्य ब्रह्मतेजसातिदुर्विषहेण दन्दह्यमानेन वपुषा सहसोच्चचाट सैव देवी भद्रकाली ॥ ५-९-१७ ॥iti teSAM vRSalAnAM rajastamaHprakRtInAM dhanamadaraja utsiktamanasAM bhagavatkalAvIrakulaM kadarthIkRtyotpathena svairaM viharatAM hiMsAvihArANAM karmAtidAruNaM yadbrahmabhUtasya sAkSAdbrahmarSisutasya nirvairasya sarvabhUtasuhRdaH sUnAyAmapyananumatamAlambhanaM tadupalabhya brahmatejasAtidurviSaheNa dandahyamAnena vapuSA sahasoccacATa saiva devI bhadrakAlI ॥ 5-9-17 ॥All the rogues and thieves who had made arrangements for the worship of Goddess Kālī were low minded and bound to the modes of passion and ignorance. They were overpowered by the desire to become very rich; therefore they had the audacity to disobey the injunctions of the Vedas, so much so that they were prepared to kill Jaḍa Bharata, a self-realized soul born in a brāhmaṇa family. Due to their envy, these dacoits brought him before the goddess Kālī for sacrifice. Such people are always addicted to envious activities, and therefore they dared to try to kill Jaḍa Bharata. Jaḍa Bharata was the best friend of all living entities. He was no one’s enemy, and he was always absorbed in meditation on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He was born of a good brāhmaṇa father, and killing him was forbidden, even though he might have been an enemy or aggressive person. In any case, there was no reason to kill Jaḍa Bharata, and the goddess Kālī could not bear this. She could immediately understand that these sinful dacoits were about to kill a great devotee of the Lord. Suddenly the deity’s body burst asunder, and the goddess Kālī personally emerged from it in a body burning with an intense and intolerable effulgence. ॥ 5-9-17 ॥
