    निर्मथ्यमानादुदधेरभूद्विषं महोल्बणं हालहलाह्वमग्रतः । सम्भ्रान्तमीनोन्मकराहिकच्छपात्तिमिद्विपग्राहतिमिङ्गिलाकुलात् ।‌। ८-७-१८ ॥nirmathyamAnAdudadherabhUdviSaM maholbaNaM hAlahalAhvamagrataH । sambhrAntamInonmakarAhikacchapAttimidvipagrAhatimiGgilAkulAt ।‌। 8-7-18 ॥The fish, sharks, tortoises and snakes were most agitated and perturbed. The entire ocean became turbulent, and even the large aquatic animals like whales, water elephants, crocodiles and timiṅgila fish ॥ large whales that can swallow small whales॥ came to the surface. While the ocean was being churned in this way, it first produced a fiercely dangerous poison called hālahala. ।‌। 8-7-18 ॥

For the sake of one’s self-interest, one has to act according to the logic of the snake and the mouse. ।‌। 8-6-20 ॥

    यात दानवदैतेयैस्तावत्सन्धिर्विधीयताम् । कालेनानुगृहीतैस्तैर्यावद्वो भव आत्मनः ।‌। ८-६-१९ ॥yAta dAnavadaiteyaistAvatsandhirvidhIyatAm । kAlenAnugRhItaistairyAvadvo bhava AtmanaH ।‌। 8-6-19 ॥As long as you are not flourishing, you should make a truce with the demons and asuras, who are now being favored by time. ।‌। 8-6-19 ॥

    श्रीभगवानुवाच हन्त ब्रह्मन्नहो शम्भो हे देवा मम भाषितम् । श‍ृणुतावहिताः सर्वे श्रेयो वः स्याद्यथा सुराः ।‌। ८-६-१८ ॥zrIbhagavAnuvAca hanta brahmannaho zambho he devA mama bhASitam । za‍RNutAvahitAH sarve zreyo vaH syAdyathA surAH ।‌। 8-6-18 ॥The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and other demigods, please hear Me with great attention, for what I say will bring good fortune for all of you. ।‌। 8-6-18 ॥

    एक एवेश्वरस्तस्मिन् सुरकार्ये सुरेश्वरः । विहर्तुकामस्तानाह समुद्रोन्मथनादिभिः ॥ ८-६-१७ ॥eka evezvarastasmin surakArye surezvaraH । vihartukAmastAnAha samudronmathanAdibhiH ॥ 8-6-17 ॥Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of the demigods, was capable of performing the activities of the demigods by Himself, He wanted to enjoy pastimes in churning the ocean. Therefore He spoke as follows. ।‌। 8-6-17 ॥

    श्रीशुक उवाच एवं विरिञ्चादिभिरीडितस्तद्विज्ञाय तेषां हृदयं यथैव । जगाद जीमूतगभीरया गिरा बद्धाञ्जलीन् संवृतसर्वकारकान् ।‌। ८-६-१६ ॥zrIzuka uvAca evaM viriJcAdibhirIDitastadvijJAya teSAM hRdayaM yathaiva । jagAda jImUtagabhIrayA girA baddhAJjalIn saMvRtasarvakArakAn ।‌। 8-6-16 ॥Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: When the Lord was thus offered prayers by the demigods, headed by Lord Brahmā, He understood the purpose for which they had approached Him. Therefore, in a deep voice that resembled the rumbling of clouds, the Lord replied to the demigods, who all stood there attentively with folded hands. ।‌। 8-6-16 ॥
