त्रिशंकुरिति विख्यात इक्ष्वाकुकुलवर्धनः । तस्य बुद्धिः समुत्पन्ना यजेयमिति राघव ॥ १-५७-११
- veracious king named Trishanku, an enhancer of Ikshvaku dynasty. Oh ! Raghava ( Rama ), an idea sprang up in the mind of Trishanku to perform a ritual . - ॥ 1-57-11॥
english translation
trizaMkuriti vikhyAta ikSvAkukulavardhanaH । tasya buddhiH samutpannA yajeyamiti rAghava ॥ 1-57-11
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगच्छेयं स्वशरीरेण देवानां परमां गतिम् । वसिष्ठं स समाहूय कथयामास चिन्तितम् ॥ १-५७-१२
- by which he will go to heaven with his own body. Then he sincerely invited Vashishtha and told him what he was thinking. ॥ 1-57-12॥
english translation
gaccheyaM svazarIreNa devAnAM paramAM gatim । vasiSThaM sa samAhUya kathayAmAsa cintitam ॥ 1-57-12
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअशक्यमिति चाप्युक्तो वसिष्ठेन महात्मना । प्रत्याख्यातो वसिष्ठेन स ययौ दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥ १-५७-१३
But the great-souled Vashishtha said it as impossible. Refused by Vashishtha, the king ( Trishanku ) went south direction . - ॥ 1-57-13॥
english translation
azakyamiti cApyukto vasiSThena mahAtmanA । pratyAkhyAto vasiSThena sa yayau dakSiNAM dizam ॥ 1-57-13
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततस्तत्कर्मसिद्ध्यर्थं पुत्रांस्तस्य गतो नृपः । वासिष्ठा दीर्घतपसस्तपो यत्र हि तेपिरे ॥ १-५७-१४
- for the purpose of realising that task, ( such a phantasmal ritual that enables him to go to heaven with his body ) the king approched the sons of Vashishtha. The place where the sons of Vasishta had been performing austerities for a long time - ॥ 1-57-14॥
english translation
tatastatkarmasiddhyarthaM putrAMstasya gato nRpaH । vAsiSThA dIrghatapasastapo yatra hi tepire ॥ 1-57-14
hk transliteration by Sanscriptत्रिशंकुः सुमहातेजाः शतं परमभास्वरम् । वसिष्ठपुत्रान् ददृशे तप्यमानान् यशस्विनः ॥ १-५७-१५
- most brilliant Trishanku reached that place. There he visited the hundred noble-souled sons of Vashishta, who were supremely self-luminescent and superbly self-refulgent by their ascesis. ॥ 1-57-15॥

trizaMkuH sumahAtejAH zataM paramabhAsvaram । vasiSThaputrAn dadRze tapyamAnAn yazasvinaH ॥ 1-57-15
