तैश्च सर्वैर्दिशापालैर्वाक्यज्ञैर्वाक्यकोविदैः | पूजितः सहयश्चैव गन्तासीत्यभिचोदितः || १-४१-११

sanskrit

All those elephants of the quarters were knowers of the essence of words and proficient in the right use of words. Treating him kindly the elephants encouraged him saying, 'You will go back with the horse'. [1-41-11]

english translation

On hearing that common blessing of all the directional-elephants, the nimble-footed Amshuman reached the place where his paternal-uncles, sons of Sagara, were rendered as mounds of ashes. [1-41-12]

teSAM tadvacanaM zrutvA jagAma laghuvikramaH | bhasmarAzIkRtA yatra pitarastasya sAgarAH || 1-41-12

स दुःखवशमापन्नस्त्वसमंजसुतस्तदा | चुक्रोश परमार्तस्तु वधात्तेषां सुदुःखितः || १-४१-१३

Then the son of Asamanjasa ( Anshuman ), overwhelmed with sorrow and deeply distressed at their destruction, bewailed with great grief. [1-41-13]

sa duHkhavazamApannastvasamaMjasutastadA | cukroza paramArtastu vadhAtteSAM suduHkhitaH || 1-41-13

यज्ञियं च हयं तत्र चरन्तमविदूरतः | ददर्श पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः || १-४१-१४

That tigerly-man Amshuman who was overwhelmed by agony and anguish, also beheld there the horse of Vedic-ritual that was grazing nearby. [1-41-14]

english translation

yajJiyaM ca hayaM tatra carantamavidUrataH | dadarza puruSavyAghro duHkhazokasamanvitaH || 1-41-14

स तेषां राजपुत्राणां कर्तुकामो जलक्रियाम् | स जलार्थं महातेजा न चापश्यज्जलाशयम् || १-४१-१५

With the intention of performing traditional funeral rites with water for the deceased princes, highly lustrous Anshuman looked around for water but could not see any reservoir of water (in the neighbourhood). [1-41-15]

sa teSAM rAjaputrANAM kartukAmo jalakriyAm | sa jalArthaM mahAtejA na cApazyajjalAzayam || 1-41-15
