[वै] ततः शारद्वतॊ वाक्यम इत्य उवाच कृपस तदा युक्तं पराप्तं च वृद्धेन पाण्डवान परति भाषितम ।। ४-२८-१ ।।

'Vaishampayana said: Then Kripa, the son of Sharadvata, said, “What the aged Bhishma has spoken concerning the Pandavas is well-reasoned, timely.' ।। 4-28-1 ।।

english translation

[vai] tataH zAradvatò vAkyama itya uvAca kRpasa tadA yuktaM parAptaM ca vRddhena pANDavAna parati bhASitama || 4-28-1 ||

धर्मार्थसहितं शलक्ष्णं तत्त्वतश च स हेतुमत तत्रानुरूपं भीष्मेण ममाप्य अत्र गिरं शृणु ।। ४-२८-२ ।।

'What Bhishma has said is in harmony with both righteousness and advantage, spoken gently and truthfully, with sound reasoning. In that spirit, hear now my own words, which I believe are fitting to the matter at hand.' ।। 4-28-2 ।।

dharmArthasahitaM zalakSNaM tattvataza ca sa hetumata tatrAnurUpaM bhISmeNa mamApya atra giraM zRNu || 4-28-2 ||

तेषां चैव गतिस तीर्थैर वासश चैषां परचिन्त्यताम नीतिर विधीयतां चापि सांप्रतं या हिता भवेत ।। ४-२८-३ ।।

'Listen also to what I would say on this matter. It is fitting that you discover the path they have taken and where they now dwell, through the careful use of spies. Then adopt a course of action that will secure your own welfare.' ।। 4-28-3 ।।

teSAM caiva gatisa tIrthaira vAsaza caiSAM paracintyatAma nItira vidhIyatAM cApi sAMprataM yA hitA bhaveta || 4-28-3 ||

नावज्ञेयॊ रिपुस तात पराकृतॊ ऽपि बुभूषता किं पुनः पाण्डवास तात सर्वास्त्रकुशला रणे ।। ४-२८-४ ।।

'O prince, one who seeks his own good must never underestimate even an ordinary enemy. What need is there to speak of the Pandavas—those skilled masters of every weapon and form of combat?' ।। 4-28-4 ।।

nAvajJeyò ripusa tAta parAkRtò 'pi bubhUSatA kiM punaH pANDavAsa tAta sarvAstrakuzalA raNe || 4-28-4 ||

तस्मात सत्रं परविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु गूढभावेषु छन्नेषु काले चॊदयम आगते ।। ४-२८-५ ।।

'Therefore, when the time comes for the return of those high-souled Pandavas—who, having entered the forest, now live in deep concealment—you must take full stock of your strength, both in your own kingdom and among the surrounding realms.' ।। 4-28-5 ।।
