[वै] आहूयमानस तु स तेन संख्ये; महामना धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः निवर्तितस तस्य गिराङ्कुशेन; गजॊ यथामत्त इवाङ्कुशेन ॥ ४-६१-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said: ‘Thus summoned to battle by the illustrious hero, the son of Dhritarashtra turned back, provoked by those reproaches, like a mighty elephant pricked by a goad.'' ॥ 4-61-1 ॥
english translation
Stung by the taunts and unable to endure them, that swift and valiant car-warrior turned his chariot away, like a serpent trampled underfoot-

तं परेक्ष्य कर्णः परिवर्तमानं; निवर्त्य संस्तभ्य च विद्ध गात्रः दुर्यॊधनं दक्षिणतॊ ऽभयगच्छत; पार्थं नृवीरॊ युधि हेममाली ॥ ४-६१-३ ॥
'And seeing Duryodhana retreat with his wounds, Karna, that illustrious hero adorned with a golden necklace, intercepted him and soothed him, while positioning himself to the north of Duryodhana’s chariot to face Partha in battle.' ॥ 4-61-3 ॥

भीष्मस ततः शांतनवॊ निवृत्य; हिरण्यकक्ष्यांस तवरयंस तुरंगान दुर्यॊधनं पश्चिमतॊ ऽभयरक्षत; पार्थान महाबाहुर अधिज्य धन्वा ॥ ४-६१-४ ॥
'Meanwhile, the mighty-armed Bhishma, son of Santanu, turning his tawny, gold-decked steeds, rushed forward, bow in hand, to shield Duryodhana from the attack of Partha.' ॥ 4-61-4 ॥

दरॊणः कृपश चैव विविंशतिश च; दुःशासनश चैव निवृत्य शीघ्रम सर्वे पुरस्ताद विततेषु चापा; दुर्यॊधनार्थं तवरिताभ्युपेयुः ॥ ४-६१-५ ॥
'And Drona, Kripa, Vivingsati, Dushasana, and others, swiftly turning back, rushed forward with drawn bows and arrows fixed on the strings to protect Duryodhana.' ॥ 4-61-5 ॥
