[वै] तं दृष्ट्वा कलीव वेषेण रथस्थं नरपुंगवम शमीम अभिमुखं यान्तं रथम आरॊप्य चॊत्तरम ॥ ४-३७-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said: “Beholding that bull among men—though clad in the guise of one of the third sex—standing upon the chariot and driving it toward the Śamī tree, having taken the fleeing Uttara up onto the car…”' ॥ 4-37-1 ॥

भीष्मद्रॊणमुखास तत्र कुरूणां रथसत्तमाः वित्रस्तमनसः सर्वे धनंजय कृताद भयात ॥ ४-३७-२ ॥
'All the great car-warriors of the Kurus, with Bhishma and Drona at their head, grew deeply anxious in their hearts, suspecting that the approaching charioteer was none other than Dhananjaya.' ॥ 4-37-2 ॥

गुरुः शस्त्रभृतां शरेष्ठॊ भारद्वाजॊ ऽभयभाषत ॥ ४-३७-३ ॥
'Seeing their spirits so shaken, and observing many strange and fearful omens, the foremost among wielders of arms—Drona, the son of Bharadwaja—spoke these words:' ॥ 4-37-3 ॥

चलाश च वाताः संवान्ति रूक्षाः परुषनिःस्वनाः भस्म वर्णप्रकाशेन तमसा संवृतं नभः ॥ ४-३७-४ ॥
'The winds blow violently and hot, hurling showers of gravel in all directions. The sky is darkened with an ashen hue.' ॥ 4-37-4 ॥

रूक्षवर्णाश च जलदा दृश्यन्ते ऽदभुतदर्शनाः निःसरन्ति च कॊशेभ्यः षस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥ ४-३७-५ ॥
'The clouds are dry, bearing no rain. And behold—our weapons of various kinds are slipping from their cases of their own accord.' ॥ 4-37-5 ॥
