[वै] ततः शांतनवॊ भीष्मॊ भरतानां पितामहः शरुतवान देशकालज्ञस तत्त्वज्ञः सर्वधर्मवित ।। ४-२७-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said: "Then Bhishma, the grandsire of the Bharatas and son of Shantanu—well-versed in the Vedas, deeply acquainted with the proper conduct for every time and place, and a master of all codes of morality—after hearing Drona’s speech, praised the words of that noble preceptor."' ।। 4-27-1 ।।

[vai] tataH zAMtanavò bhISmò bharatAnAM pitAmahaH zarutavAna dezakAlajJasa tattvajJaH sarvadharmavita || 4-27-1 ||

आचार्य वाक्यॊपरमे तद वाक्यम अभिसंदधत हितार्थं स उवाचेमां भारतीं भारतान परति ।। ४-२७-२ ।।

sanskrit

'With a heart inclined toward virtue and affection for the righteous Yudhishthira, he addressed the Bharatas with words beneficial to them, words that are rarely uttered by the deceitful and always approved by the virtuous.' ।। 4-27-2 ।।

english translation

AcArya vAkyòparame tada vAkyama abhisaMdadhata hitArthaM sa uvAcemAM bhAratIM bhAratAna parati || 4-27-2 ||

युधिष्ठिरे समासक्तां धर्मज्ञे धर्मसंश्रिताम असत्सु दुर्लभां नित्यं सतां चाभिमतां सदा भीष्मः समवदत तत्र गिरं साधुभिर अर्चिताम ।। ४-२७-३ ।।

sanskrit

'Bhishma spoke there words that are revered by the virtuous - about one who is devoted to Yudhishthira, who knows dharma and is established in dharma, who is always rare among the wicked, and who is always beloved by the good.' ।। 4-27-3 ।।

english translation

yudhiSThire samAsaktAM dharmajJe dharmasaMzritAma asatsu durlabhAM nityaM satAM cAbhimatAM sadA bhISmaH samavadata tatra giraM sAdhubhira arcitAma || 4-27-3 ||

यथैष बराह्मणः पराह दरॊणः सर्वार्थवत्त्व वित सर्वलक्षणसंपन्ना नाशं नार्हन्ति पाण्डवाः ।। ४-२७-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Just as this Brahmana, Drona, who is well-versed in the essence of all duties and aims of life, has declared — the Pandavas, who are endowed with every noble quality, do not deserve to fall into ruin.' ।। 4-27-4 ।।

english translation

yathaiSa barAhmaNaH parAha daròNaH sarvArthavattva vita sarvalakSaNasaMpannA nAzaM nArhanti pANDavAH || 4-27-4 ||

शरुतवृत्तॊपसंपन्ना साधुव्रतसमन्विताः वृद्धानुशासने मग्नाः सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ।। ४-२७-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Skilled in various branches of knowledge, ever respectful of their elders’ counsel, steadfast in their vow of truth.' ।। 4-27-5 ।।
