The passage notes Dhritarastra’s inquiry regarding the Kurukshetra gathering, prompting Sanjaya to describe Duryodhana’s force assessment and the conch shells that shook the sky. Arjuna, overwhelmed by compassion upon seeing relatives, rejects the fight, fearing ancestral ruin and sin, and casts aside his bow. Krishna addresses the despondent warrior standing between the armies. The self is eternal and indestructible, rendering grief futile. A warrior must fight righteously, viewing pleasure and pain alike to avoid sin. True wisdom rejects ritualistic rewards for self-realization beyond the Gunas. By restraining senses and renouncing attachment to results, one achieves equanimity. This steady mind eliminates desire and delusion, leading to liberation from rebirth and the attainment of the highest bliss. Abandoning desire and pride leads to the eternal Brahmic seat. Since nature compels action, one must perform obligatory duties without attachment, offering them as sacrifice to sustain the reciprocal cycle with the gods. Krishna sets a standard to prevent chaos, urging the wise to act for welfare while distinguishing the ego from the Gunas. Desire, born of Rajas, is the primary foe veiling knowledge. The hierarchy places the Self above intellect, mind, and senses. The Supreme Lord reveals ancient yoga to Arjuna, explaining His transcendental incarnations when righteousness declines. True wisdom perceives inaction in action, liberating one from rebirth through desireless duty.
