श्रीभगवानुवाच । ऊर्ध्वमूलमधःशाखमश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम् । छन्दांसि यस्य पर्णानि यस्तं वेद स वेदवित् ॥ १५-१॥

Shri Bhagwan said this phenomenal creation, which is both ephemeral and eternal, is like a tree ( an immutable Asvattha tree ), but having its root upward in the Highest and its ramifications on this earth downward. Its leaves are the Vedas. He who knows it knows the Vedas ( known as Vedvit ).

Its branches shoot upwards and downwards, deriving their nourishment from the Gunas; its buds are the objects of sense; And their secondary roots extend downwards, resulting in actions which bind in the world of men ( Manushya Lok ).
