सञ्जय उवाच । तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् । विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः ॥ २-१ ॥
Sanjaya said to him who was thus overcome with pity and who was despondent, with eyes full of tears and agitated, Madhusudana (the destroyer of Madhu) or Krsna spoke these words.
english translation
संजय ने कहा - इस प्रकार करुणा और विषाद से अभिभूत, अश्रुपूरित नेत्रों वाले आकुल अर्जुन से मधुसूदन ने यह वाक्य कहा।

saJjaya uvAca । taM tathA kRpayAviSTamazrupUrNAkulekSaNam । viSIdantamidaM vAkyamuvAca madhusUdanaH ॥ 2-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptश्रीभगवानुवाच । कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् । अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन ॥ २-२ ॥
Shri bhagavan said Whence comes on you this despondency, O Arjuna, in this crisis? It is unfit for a noble person. It is disgraceful and it obstructs one's attainment of heaven.
english translation
श्री भगवान् ने कहा - हे अर्जुन! तुमको इस विषम स्थल में यह मोह कहाँ से उत्पन्न हुआ? यह आर्य आचरण के विपरीत न तो स्वर्ग प्राप्ति का साधन ही है और न कीर्ति कराने वाला ही है।

zrIbhagavAnuvAca । kutastvA kazmalamidaM viSame samupasthitam । anAryajuSTamasvargyamakIrtikaramarjuna ॥ 2-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptक्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते । क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परन्तप ॥ २-३ ॥
O Partha, yield not to unmanliness. This does not befit you. O scorcher of foes, arise for battle, giving up the petty weakness of the heart.
english translation
हे पृथानन्दन अर्जुन! इस नपुंसकताको मत प्राप्त हो; क्योंकि तुम्हारेमें यह उचित नहीं है। हे परंतप ! हृदयकी इस तुच्छ दुर्बलताका त्याग करके युद्धके लिये खड़े हो जाओ।

klaibyaM mA sma gamaH pArtha naitattvayyupapadyate । kSudraM hRdayadaurbalyaM tyaktvottiSTha parantapa ॥ 2-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअर्जुन उवाच । कथं भीष्ममहं सङ्ख्ये द्रोणं च मधुसूदन । इषुभिः प्रतियोत्स्यामि पूजार्हावरिसूदन ॥ २-४ ॥
Arjuna said O Madhusudana, O destroyer of enemies, how can I fight with arrows in battle against Bhisma the grandfather and Dronacharya the teacher who are worthy of reverence?
english translation
अर्जुन बोले - हे मधुसूदन! मैं रणभूमि में भीष्मपितामह और आचार्य द्रोण के साथ बाणोंसे युद्ध कैसे करूँ? क्योंकि हे अरिसूदन! वे दोनों ही पूजनीय हैं।

arjuna uvAca । kathaM bhISmamahaM saGkhye droNaM ca madhusUdana । iSubhiH pratiyotsyAmi pUjArhAvarisUdana ॥ 2-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptगुरूनहत्वा हि महानुभावान् श्रेयो भोक्तुं भैक्ष्यमपीह लोके । हत्वार्थकामांस्तु गुरूनिहैव भुञ्जीय भोगान् रुधिरप्रदिग्धान् ॥ २-५ ॥
Rather than killing the noble-minded elders, it is better in this world to live even on alms. But by killing the elders we shall only be enjoying here the pleasures of wealth and desireable things drenched in blood.
english translation
इन महानुभाव गुरुजनों को मारने से इस लोक में भिक्षा का अन्न भी ग्रहण करना अधिक कल्याण कारक है, क्योंकि गुरुजनों को मारकर मैं इस लोक में रक्तरंजित अर्थ और काम रूप भोगों को ही भोगूँगा।

gurUnahatvA hi mahAnubhAvAn zreyo bhoktuM bhaikSyamapIha loke । hatvArthakAmAMstu gurUnihaiva bhuJjIya bhogAn rudhirapradigdhAn ॥ 2-5 ॥
