अर्जुन उवाच । संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि । यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्चितम् ॥ ५-१ ॥

Arjuna said: You praise, O Krishna, the renunciation of actions and then praise Karma Yoga also. Tell me with certainty which of these is the superior one leading to the ultimate good.

english translation

अर्जुन ने कहा हे - कृष्ण! आप कर्मों के संन्यास की और फिर योग (कर्म के आचरण) की प्रशंसा करते हैं। इन दोनों में एक जो निश्चय पूर्वक श्रेयस्कर है, उसको मेरे लिए कहिये।

arjuna uvAca | saMnyAsaM karmaNAM kRSNa punaryogaM ca zaMsasi | yacchreya etayorekaM tanme brUhi sunizcitam || 5-1 ||

श्रीभगवानुवाच । संन्यासः कर्मयोगश्च निःश्रेयसकरावुभौ । तयोस्तु कर्मसंन्यासात्कर्मयोगो विशिष्यते ॥ ५-२ ॥

Shri Bhagavan said Renunciation and the Yoga of action both lead to the highest bliss; but of the two, the Yoga of action is superior to the renunciation of action.

english translation

श्रीभगवान् ने कहा - कर्मसंन्यास और कर्मयोग ये दोनों ही परम कल्याणकारक हैं; परन्तु उन दोनों में कर्मसंन्यास से कर्मयोग श्रेष्ठ है।

zrIbhagavAnuvAca | saMnyAsaH karmayogazca niHzreyasakarAvubhau | tayostu karmasaMnyAsAtkarmayogo viziSyate || 5-2 ||

ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति । निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते ॥ ५-३ ॥

He should be known as a perpertual Sannyasi who neither hates nor desires; for, free from the pairs of opposites, O mighty-armed Arjuna, he is easily set free from bondage.

english translation

हे महाबाहो! जो मनुष्य न किसीसे द्वेष करता है और न किसीकी आकाङ्क्षा करता है; वह (कर्मयोगी) सदा संन्यासी समझनेयोग्य है; क्योंकि द्वन्द्वोंसे रहित मनुष्य सुखपूर्वक संसार-बन्धनसे मुक्त हो जाता है।

jJeyaH sa nityasaMnyAsI yo na dveSTi na kAGkSati | nirdvandvo hi mahAbAho sukhaM bandhAtpramucyate || 5-3 ||

साङ्ख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः । एकमप्यास्थितः सम्यगुभयोर्विन्दते फलम् ॥ ५-४ ॥

The childish, not the learned ones, speak of Sankhya (the path of Knowledge) and (Karma-) yoga as different. Any one who properly resorts to even one (of them) gets the result of both.

english translation

बालक अर्थात् बालबुद्धि के लोग सांख्ययोग और कर्मयोगको अलग-अलग फलवाले कहते हैं, न कि पण्डितजन; क्योंकि इन दोनोंमेंसे एक साधनमें भी अच्छी तरहसे स्थित मनुष्य दोनोंके फलरूप परमात्माको प्राप्त कर लेता है।

sAGkhyayogau pRthagbAlAH pravadanti na paNDitAH | ekamapyAsthitaH samyagubhayorvindate phalam || 5-4 ||

यत्साङ्ख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते । एकं साङ्ख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स पश्यति ॥ ५-५॥

The State (Sthana) called Salvation; that is reached by the Sankhyas, by the monks steadfast in Knowledge; that is reached by the karma yogis. The Karma yogis are those who, as a means to the attainment of Knowledge, undertake actions by dedicating them to God without seeking any result for themselves. He alone is wise who sees that the Sankhya and the Yoga are one and the same because of their having the same result.

सांख्ययोगियोंके द्वारा जो तत्त्व प्राप्त किया जाता है, कर्मयोगियोंके द्वारा भी वही प्राप्त किया जाता है। अतः जो मनुष्य सांख्ययोग और कर्मयोगको (फलरूपमें) एक देखता है, वही यथार्थ देखता है।

yatsAGkhyaiH prApyate sthAnaM tadyogairapi gamyate | ekaM sAGkhyaM ca yogaM ca yaH pazyati sa pazyati || 5-5||
