अथातो दोषभेदविकल्पमध्यायं व्याख्यास्यामः ॥१॥
Now we shall discourse on the chapter which (deals with and) is called the different modifications (combinations) of the different Doshas.

He who is learned in the eight branches of Ayurveda, the mighty Divodasa, who has overcome doubts regarding the use of sharp instruments, and who has penetrated the profound ocean of subtle knowledge.

वह जो आयुर्वेद की आठ शाखाओं में पारंगत है, शक्तिशाली दिवोदास, जिसने तीक्ष्ण यंत्रों के उपयोग के संबंध में संदेहों पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है, और जो सूक्ष्म ज्ञान के अथाह सागर में प्रवेश कर चुका है।

The revered Sushruta, the son of Vishvamitra, asks: 'There are sixty-two varieties of the Doshas that have been previously described; how are they divided when taken one, two, or all three at a time?

विश्वामित्र के पुत्र श्रद्धेय सुश्रुत पूछते हैं: 'पहले बताए गए दोषों के बासठ प्रकार हैं; एक, दो या तीनों को एक साथ लेने पर उनका विभाजन किस प्रकार होता है?

vizvAmitrasutaH zrImAn suzrutaH paripRcchati । dviSaSTirdoSabhedA ye purastAtparikIrtitAH ॥4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकति तत्रैकशो ज्ञेया द्विशो वाऽप्यथवा त्रिशः । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा संशयच्छिन्महातपाः ॥५॥
How many of these (combinations) are to be known when taken one at a time, two at a time, or three at a time? On hearing this question, the great sage and king, with all his doubts resolved, was greatly pleased.

इनमें से कितने (संयोजन) एक-एक करके, दो-दो करके या तीन-तीन करके जाने जा सकते हैं? यह प्रश्न सुनकर महर्षि और राजा के सारे संदेह दूर हो गए और वे बहुत प्रसन्न हुए।
