प्रीतात्मा नृपशार्दूलः सुश्रुतायाह तत्त्वतः | त्रयो दोषा धातवश्च पुरीषं मूत्रमेव च ||६||

The delighted king, a lion among men, said to Sushruta, in truth: "The three doshas, the dhatus, feces, and urine..."

देहं सन्धारयन्त्येते ह्यव्यापन्ना रसैर्हितैः | पुरुषः षोडशकलः प्राणाश्चैकादशैव ये ||७||

"These (doshas and dhatus) maintain the body, held together by the vital essences (rasas) in their normal state. The human body consists of sixteen sub-strata, and there are eleven vital breaths (pranas)."

The Pranas (viz., the organs of sense) are eleven in number while the number of diseases is one thousand one hundred and twenty and that of elementary sub stances (Dravya) is five hundred and seventy-three,—these have already been explained in detail.

व्यासतः कीर्तितं तद्धि... | ... भिन्ना दोषास्त्रयो गुणाः | द्विषष्टिधा भवन्त्येते भूयिष्ठमिति निश्चयः ||९||

"The three qualities (doshas) are divided into sixty-two varieties, and these three doshas and their combinations, when considered in their various aspects, form distinct divisions. Thus, it is concluded that there are sixty-two combinations in total, based on the aggravation, diminution, and balance of the doshas."

त्रय एव पृथक् दोषा द्विशो नव समाधिकैः | त्रयोदशाधिकैकद्विसममध्योल्बणैस्त्रिशः ||१०||

The three doshas, when taken separately, have three combinations. When taken in pairs, nine combinations are formed. When all three doshas are considered together, thirteen combinations arise, both in equal and unequal aggravations.
