स वातपित्तप्रभवः कफाच्च क्षतात्तथाऽन्यः क्षयजोऽपरश्च | पञ्चप्रकारः कथितो भिषग्भिर्विवर्धितो यक्ष्मविकारकृत् स्यात् ||६||

The disease of cough (Kasa) is classified into five types, as identified by physicians. It may originate from the derangement of Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, or it could be caused by ulcers (Kshata) or a wasting process (Kshayaja). When fully developed, it can lead to phthisis (tuberculosis).

भविष्यतस्तस्य तु कण्ठकण्डूर्भोज्योपरोधो गलतालुलेपः | स्वशब्दवैषम्यमरोचकोऽग्निसादश्च लिङ्गानि भवन्त्यमूनि ||७||

In the future, the person affected by cough will experience symptoms such as itching in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, a feeling of obstruction in the throat, a sticky sensation in the throat, hoarseness of voice, loss of appetite, and indigestion. These are the indications or signs of the condition as it progresses.

हृच्छङ्खमूर्धोदरपार्श्वशूली क्षामाननः क्षीणबलस्वरौजाः | प्रसक्तमन्तःकफमीरणेन कासेत्तु शुष्कं स्वरभेदयुक्तः ||८||

The symptoms of cough caused by Vata include pain in the heart, temples, stomach, and sides, along with a pale complexion, weak voice, and diminished strength. The person becomes weak, experiences dryness in the body, and suffers from hoarseness, with dry cough and no expectoration of mucus. The cough is often associated with a change in voice and a sensation of obstruction in the throat.

उरोविदाहज्वरवक्त्रशोषैरभ्यर्दितस्तिक्तमुखस्तृषार्तः | पित्तेन पीतानि वमेत् कटूनि कासेत् स पाण्डुः परिदह्यमानः ||९||

The symptoms of a cough caused by Pitta include a burning sensation in the chest, fever, dryness of the mouth, and a bitter taste. The patient experiences excessive thirst and may vomit bitter or acidic substances. The cough is often accompanied by a yellowish or pungent expectoration, and the person may also experience a burning sensation in the body. The individual appears pale and is in a state of physical discomfort, feeling internally heated or inflamed.

The symptoms of a cough caused by Kapha include a feeling of heaviness and fullness in the body, as well as congestion. The person may have a pale, bloated appearance, with the head feeling heavy due to sinus congestion or nasal blockage. The patient experiences a dull headache and a sensation of fatigue, along with a cough that is frequent and often accompanied by thick, sticky mucus. The cough is not intense but persistent, and the individual may also feel sluggish or lethargic, with a reduced appetite and a general sense of discomfort.
