The seven types of thirst are classified as follows: the first three types arise from the disturbances of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), the fourth type is due to injury (Kshataja), the fifth is caused by the depletion of vital fluids (Kshayaja), the sixth type results from indigestion (Amja), and the seventh type arises from dietary errors (Annaja). Each type has its specific symptoms, which are to be understood in sequence.

The symptoms of thirst caused by Vata (Vataja Thirst) include dryness and roughness in the mouth, lips, and throat, with a tingling or burning sensation. There is also an obstruction of the water-carrying channels in the body, leading to a bad taste in the mouth. The condition may worsen with the consumption of cold water, leading to an aggravation of the symptoms. These manifestations are further accompanied by a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, and sometimes delirium.

In Pittaja Thirst, the symptoms include fainting, delirium, excessive thirst, dryness of the mouth, lips, and throat, along with a sensation of heat throughout the body. The patient experiences a bitter taste in the mouth and a desire for coldness, often accompanied by yellowing of the eyes, nausea, and loss of appetite. There is also a burning sensation throughout the body, and the person may crave cold substances to relieve the discomfort. The condition is marked by a strong desire for cooling treatments, such as the use of cooling herbs or cold applications.

In Kaphaja Thirst, the symptoms include excessive dryness in the mouth and throat, a heavy feeling in the body, and extreme thirst. The individual may also experience a sensation of sleepiness, along with a craving for sweet or fatty substances. The person afflicted with this type of thirst may feel increasingly weak and emaciated, and may suffer from a general sense of lethargy or heaviness. This condition arises due to the obstruction caused by excess Kapha, which dries up the water-carrying channels in the body.
