यथा पुनः स्वे ख इदं निवेश्य शेते गुहायां स निवृत्तवृत्तिः । योगेश्वराधीश्वर एक एतदनुप्रविष्टो बहुधा यथाऽऽसीत् ।। ३-५-६ ।।

sanskrit

He lies down on His own heart spread in the form of the sky, and thus placing the whole creation in that space, He expands Himself into many living entities, which are manifested as different species of life. He does not have to endeavor for His maintenance, because He is the master of all mystic powers and the proprietor of everything. Thus He is distinct from the living entities. ।। 3-5-6 ।।

english translation

वे आकाश के रूप में फैले अपने ही हृदय में लेट जाते हैं और उस आकाश में सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि को रखकर वे अपना विस्तार अनेक जीवों में करते हैं, जो विभिन्न योनियों के रूप में प्रकट होते हैं। उन्हें अपने निर्वाह के लिए कोई प्रयास नहीं करना पड़ता क्योंकि वे समस्त यौगिक शक्तियों के स्वामी और प्रत्येक वस्तु के मालिक है। इस प्रकार वे जीवों से भिन्न है। ।। ३-५-६ ।।

क्रीडन्विधत्ते द्विजगोसुराणां क्षेमाय कर्माण्यवतारभेदैः । मनो न तृप्यत्यपि श‍ृण्वतां नः सुश्लोकमौलेश्चरितामृतानि ।। ३-५-७ ।।

sanskrit

You may narrate also about the auspicious characteristics of the Lord in His different incarnations for the welfare of the twice-born, the cows and the demigods. Our minds are never satisfied completely, although we continuously hear of His transcendental activities. ।। 3-5-7 ।।

english translation

आप द्विजों, गौवों तथा देवताओं के कल्याण हेतु भगवान् के विभिन्न अवतारों के शुभ लक्षणों के विषय में भी वर्णन करें। यद्यपि हम निरन्तर उनके दिव्य कार्यकलापों के विषय में सुनते हैं, किन्तु हमारे मन कभी भी पूर्णतया तुष्ट नहीं हो पाते। ।। ३-५-७ ‌।।

यैस्तत्त्वभेदैरधिलोकनाथो लोकानलोकान् सह लोकपालान् । अचीक्लृपद्यत्र हि सर्वसत्त्वनिकायभेदोऽधिकृतः प्रतीतः ।। ३-५-८ ।।

sanskrit

The Supreme King of all kings has created different planets and places of habitation where living entities are situated in terms of the modes of nature and work, and He has created their different kings and rulers. ।। 3-5-8 ।।

english translation

समस्त राजाओं के परम राजा ने विभिन्न लोकों की तथा आवास स्थलों की सृष्टि की जहाँ प्रकृति के गुणों और कर्म के अनुसार सारे जीव स्थित है और उन्होंने उनके विभिन्न राजाओं तथा शासकों का भी सृजन किया। ।। ३-५-८ ।।

येन प्रजानामुत आत्मकर्मरूपाभिधानां च भिदां व्यधत्त । नारायणो विश्वसृगात्मयोनिरेतच्च नो वर्णय विप्रवर्य ।। ३-५-९ ।।

O chief amongst the brāhmaṇas, please also describe how Nārāyaṇa, the creator of the universe and the self-sufficient Lord, has differently created the natures, activities, forms, features and names of the different living creatures. ।। 3-5-9 ।।

english translation

हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ, आप यह भी बतलाएँ कि ब्रह्माण्ड के स्रष्टा तथा आत्मनिर्भर प्रभु नारायण ने किस तरह विभिन्न जीवों के स्वभावों, कार्यों, रूपों, लक्षणों तथा नामों की पृथक्-पृथक् रचना की है। ।। ३-५-९ ।।

परावरेषां भगवन्व्रतानि श्रुतानि मे व्यासमुखादभीक्ष्णम् । अतृप्नुम क्षुल्लसुखावहानां तेषामृते कृष्णकथामृतौघात् ।। ३-५-१० ।।

sanskrit

O my lord, I have repeatedly heard about these higher and lower statuses of human society from the mouth of Vyāsadeva, and I am quite satiated with all these lesser subject matters and their happiness. They have not satisfied me with the nectar of topics about Kṛṣṇa. ।। 3-5-10 ।।

english translation

हे प्रभु, मैं व्यासदेव के मुख से मानव समाज के इन उच्चतर तथा निम्नतर पदों के विषय में बारम्बार सुन चुका हूँ और मैं इन कम महत्व वाले विषयों तथा उनके सुखों से पूर्णतया तृप्त हूँ। पर वे विषय बिना कृष्ण विषयक कथाओं के अमृत से मुझे तुष्ट नहीं कर सके। ।। ३-५-१० ।।
