कस्तृप्नुयात्तीर्थपदोऽभिधानात्सत्रेषु वः सूरिभिरीड्यमानात् । यः कर्णनाडीं पुरुषस्य यातो भवप्रदां गेहरतिं छिनत्ति ।। ३-५-११ ।।

sanskrit

Who in human society can be satisfied without hearing sufficient talk of the Lord, whose lotus feet are the sum total of all places of pilgrimage and who is worshiped by great sages and devotees? Such topics can cut off one’s bondage to family affection simply by entering the holes of one’s ears. ।। 3-5-11 ।।

english translation

जिनके चरणकमल समस्त तीर्थों के सार रूप हैं तथा जिनकी आराधना महर्षियों तथा भक्तों द्वारा की जाती है, ऐसे भगवान् के विषय में पर्याप्त श्रवण किये बिना मानव समाज में ऐसा कौन होगा जो तुष्ट होता हो? मनुष्य के कानों के छेदों में ऐसी कथाएँ प्रविष्ट होकर उसके पारिवारिक मोह के बन्धन को काट देती हैं। ।। ३-५-११ ।।

मुनिर्विवक्षुर्भगवद्गुणानां सखापि ते भारतमाह कृष्णः । यस्मिन्नृणां ग्राम्यसुखानुवादैर्मतिर्गृहीता नु हरेः कथायाम् ।। ३-५-१२ ।।

sanskrit

Your friend the great sage Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana Vyāsa has already described the transcendental qualities of the Lord in his great work the Mahābhārata. But the whole idea is to draw the attention of the mass of people to kṛṣṇa-kathā [Bhagavad-gītā] through their strong affinity for hearing mundane topics. ।। 3-5-12 ।।

english translation

आपके मित्र महर्षि कृष्णद्वैपायन व्यास पहले ही अपने महान् ग्रन्थ महाभारत में भगवान् के दिव्य गुणों का वर्णन कर चुके हैं। किन्तु इसका सारा उद्देश्य सामान्य जन का ध्यान लौकिक कथाओं को सुनने के प्रति उनके प्रबल आकर्षण के माध्यम से कृष्णकथा (भगवद्गीता) की ओर आकृष्ट करना है। ।। ३-५-१२ ।।

सा श्रद्दधानस्य विवर्धमाना विरक्तिमन्यत्र करोति पुंसः । हरेः पदानुस्मृतिनिर्वृतस्य समस्तदुःखाप्ययमाशु धत्ते ।। ३-५-१३ ।।

sanskrit

For one who is anxious to engage constantly in hearing such topics, kṛṣṇa-kathā gradually increases his indifference towards all other things. Such constant remembrance of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa by the devotee who has achieved transcendental bliss vanquishes all his miseries without delay. ।। 3-5-13 ।।

english translation

जो व्यक्ति ऐसी कथाओं का निरन्तर श्रवण करते रहने के लिए आतुर रहता है, उसके लिए कृष्णकथा क्रमश: अन्य सभी बातों के प्रति उसकी उदासीनता को बढ़ा देती है। वह भक्त जिसने दिव्य आनन्द प्राप्त कर लिया हो उसके द्वारा भगवान् के चरणकमलों का ऐसा निरन्तर स्मरण तुरन्त ही उसके सारे कष्टों को दूर कर देता है। ।। ३-५-१३ ।।

ताञ्छोच्यशोच्यानविदोऽनुशोचे हरेः कथायां विमुखानघेन । क्षिणोति देवोऽनिमिषस्तु येषामायुर्वृथा वादगतिस्मृतीनाम् ।। ३-५-१४ ।।

sanskrit

O sage, persons who because of their sinful activities are averse to the topics of Transcendence and thus ignorant of the purpose of the Mahābhārata [Bhagavad-gītā] are pitied by the pitiable. I also pity them because I see how their duration of life is spoiled by eternal time while they involve themselves in presentations of philosophical speculation, theoretical ultimate goals of life, and different modes of ritual. ।। 3-5-14 ।।

english translation

हे मुनि, जो व्यक्ति अपने पाप कर्मों के कारण दिव्य कथा-प्रसंगों से विमुख रहते हैं और फलस्वरूप महाभारत (भगवद्गीता) के उद्देश्य से वंचित रह जाते हैं, वे दयनीय द्वारा भी दया के पात्र होते हैं। मुझे भी उन पर तरस आती है, क्योंकि मैं देख रहा हूँ कि किस तरह नित्यकाल द्वारा उनकी आयु नष्ट की जा रही है। वे दार्शनिक चिन्तन, जीवन के सैद्धान्तिक चरम लक्ष्यों तथा विभिन्न कर्मकाण्डों की विधियों को प्रस्तुत करने में स्वयं को लगाये रहते हैं। ।। ३-५-१४ ।।

तदस्य कौषारव शर्म दातुर्हरेः कथामेव कथासु सारम् । उद्धृत्य पुष्पेभ्य इवार्तबन्धो शिवाय नः कीर्तय तीर्थकीर्तेः ।। ३-५-१५ ।।

sanskrit

O Maitreya, O friend of the distressed, the glories of the Supreme Lord can alone do good for people all over the world. Therefore, just as bees collect honey from flowers, kindly describe the essence of all topics — the topics of the Lord. ।। 3-5-15 ।।

english translation

हे मैत्रेय, हे दुखियारों के मित्र, एकमात्र भगवान् की महिमा सारे जगत के लोगों का कल्याण करने वाली है। अतएव जिस तरह मधुमक्खियाँ फूलों से मधु एकत्र करती हैं, उसी तरह कृपया समस्त कथाओं के सार—कृष्णकथा—का वर्णन कीजिये। ।। ३-५-१५ ।।
