    अस्यामायत्तमस्माकं यत्कृत्यं रघुनन्दन । अहमेनं वधिष्यामि ग्रहीष्याम्यपि वा मृगम् ॥ ३-४३-४६asyAmAyattamasmAkaM yatkRtyaM raghunandana । ahamenaM vadhiSyAmi grahISyAmyapi vA mRgam ॥ 3-43-46- Oh ! Lakshmana, delight of the Raghu dynasty. Whatever duty we have to perform depends on her protection. I will either kill the deer or catch it - ॥ 3-43-46॥

Vatapi you killed the best of brahmins living in this world, disregarding them because of your power. Hence you were digested by me.' ॥ 3-43-43॥

    समुत्थाने व तद्रूपं कर्तुकामं समीक्ष्य तम् । उत्स्मयित्वा तु भगवान्वातापिमिदमब्रवीत् ॥ ३-४३-४२samutthAne va tadrUpaM kartukAmaM samIkSya tam । utsmayitvA tu bhagavAnvAtApimidamabravIt ॥ 3-43-42When the venerable sage Agastya got up (after eating), he observed Vatapi wishing to turn into his real form. So smiling at him, he said ॥ 3-43-42॥

    पुरस्तादिह वातापिः परिभूय तपस्विनः । उदरस्थो द्विजान्हन्तिस्वगर्भोऽश्वतरीमिव ॥ ३-४३-४०purastAdiha vAtApiH paribhUya tapasvinaH । udarastho dvijAnhantisvagarbho'zvatarImiva ॥ 3-43-40Earlier in this forest, Vatapi used to humiliate the ascetic brahmins and to kill them by entering into their stomach like a womb killing the female mule. ॥ 3-43-40॥

    उत्थाय बहवो येन मृगयायां जनाधिपाः । निहताः परमेष्वासास्तस्माद्वध्यस्त्वयं मृगः ॥ ३-४३-३९utthAya bahavo yena mRgayAyAM janAdhipAH । nihatAH parameSvAsAstasmAdvadhyastvayaM mRgaH ॥ 3-43-39Many kings who were great archers who set out on hunting expedition were killed by him. Therefore, this animal deserves to be killed. ॥ 3-43-39॥

    एतेन हि नृशंसेन मारीचेनाकृतात्मना । वने विचरता पूर्वं हिंसिता मुनिपुङ्गवाः ॥ ३-४३-३८etena hi nRzaMsena mArIcenAkRtAtmanA । vane vicaratA pUrvaM hiMsitA munipuGgavAH ॥ 3-43-38The great sages were tortured and killed earlier by this cruel, evilminded Maricha while wandering in the forest. ॥ 3-43-38॥

    यदि वाऽयं तथा यन्मां भवेद्वदसि लक्ष्मण । मायैषा राक्षसस्येति कर्तव्योस्य वधो मया ॥ ३-४३-३७yadi vA'yaM tathA yanmAM bhavedvadasi lakSmaNa । mAyaiSA rAkSasasyeti kartavyosya vadho mayA ॥ 3-43-37Lakshmana, as you say, if it is the illusion of a demon, even then it should be killed by me. ॥ 3-43-37॥
