एष चैव मृगश्श्रीमान् यश्च दिव्यो नभश्चरः | उभावेतौ मृगौ दिव्यौ तारामृगमहीमृगौ || ३-४३-३६

This majestic deer and the deer flying in heaven ( the deer's figure seen in the Moon called Mrigasira ) both the deer of the star in the sky and the deer of the earth are divine. [3-43-36]

eSa caiva mRgazzrImAn yazca divyo nabhazcaraH | ubhAvetau mRgau divyau tArAmRgamahImRgau || 3-43-36

यदि वाऽयं तथा यन्मां भवेद्वदसि लक्ष्मण | मायैषा राक्षसस्येति कर्तव्योस्य वधो मया || ३-४३-३७

Lakshmana, as you say, if it is the illusion of a demon, even then it should be killed by me. [3-43-37]

yadi vA'yaM tathA yanmAM bhavedvadasi lakSmaNa | mAyaiSA rAkSasasyeti kartavyosya vadho mayA || 3-43-37

एतेन हि नृशंसेन मारीचेनाकृतात्मना | वने विचरता पूर्वं हिंसिता मुनिपुङ्गवाः || ३-४३-३८

The great sages were tortured and killed earlier by this cruel, evilminded Maricha while wandering in the forest. [3-43-38]

उत्थाय बहवो येन मृगयायां जनाधिपाः | निहताः परमेष्वासास्तस्माद्वध्यस्त्वयं मृगः || ३-४३-३९

Many kings who were great archers who set out on hunting expedition were killed by him. Therefore, this animal deserves to be killed. [3-43-39]

utthAya bahavo yena mRgayAyAM janAdhipAH | nihatAH parameSvAsAstasmAdvadhyastvayaM mRgaH || 3-43-39

पुरस्तादिह वातापिः परिभूय तपस्विनः | उदरस्थो द्विजान्हन्तिस्वगर्भोऽश्वतरीमिव || ३-४३-४०

Earlier in this forest, Vatapi used to humiliate the ascetic brahmins and to kill them by entering into their stomach like a womb killing the female mule. [3-43-40]

purastAdiha vAtApiH paribhUya tapasvinaH | udarastho dvijAnhantisvagarbho'zvatarImiva || 3-43-40
