[वै] सहदेवॊ ऽपि गॊपानां कृत्वा वेषम अनुत्तमम भाषां चैषां समास्थाय विराटम उपयाद अथ ॥ ४-९-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said: "Then, clad in the dress of a cowherd and speaking their rustic dialect, Sahadeva came to the cattle-yard in the city of Virata."' ॥ 4-9-1 ॥
english translation
[vai] sahadevò 'pi gòpAnAM kRtvA veSama anuttamama bhASAM caiSAM samAsthAya virATama upayAda atha ॥ 4-9-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतम आयान्तम अभिप्रेक्ष्य भराजमानं नरर्षभम समुपस्थाय वै राजा पप्रच्छ कुरुनन्दनम ॥ ४-९-२ ॥
'Seeing this extraordinary man shining with a remarkable splendor, the king was filled with wonder. He commanded his men to bring Sahadeva before him.' ॥ 4-9-2 ॥
english translation
tama AyAntama abhiprekSya bharAjamAnaM nararSabhama samupasthAya vai rAjA papraccha kurunandanama ॥ 4-9-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकस्य वा तवं कुतॊ वा तवं किं वा तात चिकीर्षसि न हि मे दृष्टपूर्वस तवं तत्त्वं बरूहि नरर्षभ ॥ ४-९-३ ॥
'When Sahadeva appeared, the king addressed him: ‘Whose servant art thou? From where hast thou come? What business dost thou seek here? I have never seen thee before. O bull among men, speak truthfully about thyself.’' ॥ 4-9-3 ॥
english translation
kasya vA tavaM kutò vA tavaM kiM vA tAta cikIrSasi na hi me dRSTapUrvasa tavaM tattvaM barUhi nararSabha ॥ 4-9-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस पराप्य राजानम अमित्रतापनस; ततॊ ऽबरवीन मेघमहौघनिःस्वनः वैश्यॊ ऽसमि नाम्नाहम अरिष्टनेमिर; गॊसंख्य आसं कुरुपुंगवानाम ॥ ४-९-४ ॥
'Having come before the king, that scourge of enemies, Sahadeva spoke with a voice deep as the thundercloud’s roar: "I am a Vaisya, Arishtanemi by name. I serve as a cowherd to those mighty bulls of the Kuru race, the sons of Pandu."' ॥ 4-9-4 ॥

sa parApya rAjAnama amitratApanasa; tatò 'baravIna meghamahaughaniHsvanaH vaizyò 'sami nAmnAhama ariSTanemira; gòsaMkhya AsaM kurupuMgavAnAma ॥ 4-9-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवस्तुं तवयीच्छामि विशां वरिष्ठ; तान राजसिंहान न हि वेद्मि पार्थान न शक्यते जीवितुम अन्यकर्मणा; न च तवदन्यॊ मम रॊचते नृपः ॥ ४-९-५ ॥
'O foremost among men, I now intend to live here by thy side, for I know not where those lion-hearted sons of Pritha are. I cannot live without service, and, O king, I wish to serve none but thee.' ॥ 4-9-5 ॥
english translation
vastuM tavayIcchAmi vizAM variSTha; tAna rAjasiMhAna na hi vedmi pArthAna na zakyate jIvituma anyakarmaNA; na ca tavadanyò mama ròcate nRpaH ॥ 4-9-5 ॥
