Hearing these words, King Virata said, “Thou must be either a Brahmana or a Kshatriya, for thou lookest like the lord of the earth encircled by the sea. Speak truly, O mighty slayer of foes. The duties of a Vaisya are not fitting for thee.

कस्यासि राज्ञॊ विषयाद इहागतः; किं चापि शिल्पं तव विद्यते कृतम कथं तवम अस्मासु निवत्स्यसे सदा; वदस्व किं चापि तवेह वेतनम ।। ४-९-७ ।।

'Tell me, from which kingdom dost thou come? What skills dost thou possess? In what capacity wouldst thou dwell here with us? And what wages wouldst thou require?' ।। 4-9-7 ।।

'Sahadeva said: "I am the youngest of the five sons of Pandu; the eldest among them is King Yudhishthira. He commands eighty thousand cows, arranged in herds of a hundred each."' ।। 4-9-8 ।।

अपरे दशसाहस्रा दविस तावन्तस तथापरे तेषां गॊसंख्य आसं वै तन्तिपालेति मां विदुः ।। ४-९-९ ।।

'There were others—two groups of ten thousand each, and so on. I belonged to those herds, and thus they called me Tantripala.' ।। 4-9-9 ।।
