All beings cried out; the directions grew dark; and for the Kurus a severe, ominous misfortune appeared—harsh and dreadful in aspect.

english translation

Neither the sky, nor the directions, nor the earth—nor even the sun—could be clearly discerned, O best of the Bharatas, because of the masses of arrows of Kirīṭin (Arjuna).

Some chariot-commanders were seen—standards and elephants disabled, horses neutralized, and their chariots driven off-course—in grievous distress.

english translation

Other chariot-warriors, bereft of their chariots, were seen running in every direction—still armed, with armlets upon their arms—here and there across the field.

english translation

Horsemen, abandoning their horses, and elephant-riders upon tusked elephants fled in all directions, O king, out of fear of Arjuna.
