Sañjaya said: Seeing the vast army of the Dhārtarāṣṭras drawn up and ready, King Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, fell into despondency.

english translation

The Pāṇḍava, observing the formation devised by Bhīṣma as ‘impenetrable,’ and regarding it as if unbreakable, spoke to Arjuna in a troubled state.

english translation

O Dhanaṃjaya, how can we contend in this engagement with the Dhārtarāṣṭras, O mighty-armed one, when their combatant is the Grandfather (Bhīṣma)?

english translation

This formation, devised by Bhīṣma—one who subdues opponents—by a method grounded in the treatises, is unshakable and impenetrable, supported by great prowess.

english translation

Thus we, together with our forces, have come into uncertainty, O subduer of enemies. How will there be for us a way out from this great formation?
