Sañjaya said: To him—thus overcome by compassion, his eyes clouded and filled with tears, sinking into despondency—Madhusūdana spoke these words.

english translation

The Blessed Lord said: From where has this confusion of dharma come upon you at this critical juncture? It is not the way of the noble; it does not lead to higher attainment, and it brings disrepute, O Arjuna.

english translation

Do not fall into unmanliness, O Pārtha; it is not fitting for you. Cast off this petty weakness of heart and rise up, O scorcher of foes.

english translation

Arjuna said: How shall I contend in battle with Bhīṣma and with Droṇa, O Madhusūdana, by means of arrows—those who are worthy of reverence, O destroyer of foes?

english translation

Indeed, in this world it would be better to live even by alms than to slay these venerable teachers of great majesty. For if, here, one were to kill teachers driven by worldly gain and desire, the pleasures one would enjoy would be stained with blood and tainted by the burden of that deed.
